Man United fans in awe of Mainoo - and Wright and Lineker agree over future

The Manchester United academy graduate was featuring in his 15th game of a breakthrough season, and made it five wins in five straight starts.

Playing alongside Casemiro in the middle of the pitch, the 18-year-old completed six dribbles, the most of any player in the match, and clips of his skills soon went viral.

United fans were left in awe of Mainoo's skills, and they were joined by some high profile names.

Showing his appreciation on social media, Arsenal legend Ian Wright wrote: "Kobbie Mainoo has to be in the next England squad.

"Such maturity in chaotic conditions that we've not seen from an England player in a long time. Impressed every time I watch him."

His Match of the Day co-host Gary Lineker commented: "Agreed Ian Wright. What a fabulous young player."

The calls for Mainoo to feature in Gareth Southgate's squad may come as a surprise to some given the England manager has just four games to perfect his team before Euro 2024.

However, Southgate may have another motivation to get Mainoo in the set-up sooner rather than later.

The Stockport-born youngster is also eligible to play for Ghana, and according to the Daily Mail, he's keen to keep his international options open.

Mainoo will accept any call-up from Southgate, but is unlikely to commit to the Three Lions until he feels he's guaranteed to have a future with the side.

Committing could be taken out of his hands, though, as featuring in more than two competitive matches ties you to a country.

However, the four upcoming friendlies for England wouldn't count towards that tally, and could allow Mainoo to defer his decision.

Ghana will certainly hope he doesn't feature at Euro 2024, with FA executive Randy Abbey saying: "The Ghana Football Association is interested in monitoring, attracting, and persuading all eligible talents for its various national teams.

"Kobbie is definitely one of such incredible talents, and the Association will love to work with him and many like him home and abroad."
