The PSV Eindhoven youngster is the latest in a long line of players heavily linked with the club as transfer deadline day inches closer.
United's interest in the 23-year-old winger reaffirms the club's reliance on the Dutch transfer market this summer following the signings of Lisandro Martinez from Ajax and Tyrell Malacia from Feyenoord.
Speaking to talkSPORT, Alex Crook believes that a move for Gakpo is seen as an alternative to their current options.
Crook said of United's Gakpo interest: "He's viewed as a cheaper alternative to Antony who Erik ten Hag wanted to bring with him from his old club Ajax - but doesn't look as though that's moving forward at any great pace.
"Gakpo is another name in the frame now. I think this would be more palatable to Manchester United fans than Marko Arnautovic.
"I think Gakpo is a more exciting option than Arnautovic but it's all getting very desperate as far as Manchester United are concerned."
Predominantly a left winger, Gakpo can play on the right side or through the middle and United could benefit from his versatility.
But that would hinge on many factors, including whether former Man United striker and current PSV boss Ruud van Nistelrooy would be willing to lend a hand to his old club.
Meanwhile, they are also still in the mix for Adrien Rabiot after agreeing a fee with Juventus for the France international.
Whilst Rabiot is believed to be keen on a move to Old Trafford, Ligue 1 side Monaco are circling and have their sights set on a swoop for the former Paris Saint-Germain midfielder and Crook believes Tuesday night's Champions League qualifier between PSV and Monaco could have implications for Rabiot's next destination
"PSV Eindhoven play Monaco in the Champions League qualifier tonight and this could be quite a key game for Manchester United's recruitment department," Crook said.
"We know they [Manchester United] are already in for Adrien Rabiot at Juventus, a fee has been agreed with the Italian club.
"He is represented by his mum Veronique who is waiting to see if Monaco - who also want Rabiot - progress past the Champions League qualifier before engaging in further talks."
