Man City fans mock Liverpool and Gerrard with chant after winning title

mirror.co.uk, 22 May 2022, 19:20
Aston Villa manager and former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard came desperately close to denying Manchester City the title, only for Pep Guardiola's side to mount a dramatic comeback Steven Gerrard's Aston Villa almost denied Manchester City the title

A section of Manchester City's support launched into a chant at the expense of former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard after beating his Aston Villa side to win the Premier League title.

The former England midfielder was part of the Liverpool side denied by City in the 2013-14 title race, famously slipping in a defeat against Chelsea which handed the advantage to the Manchester club. However, with 20 minutes left on the clock on Sunday it looked as though he - and former Liverpool teammate Philippe Coutinho - might get their long-awaited revenge.

After Matty Cash's header saw Villa go into the break 1-0 up, Coutinho doubled their advantage. It wasn't to be, though, with Ilkay Gundogan scoring twice - once each side of a Rodri finish - to give Pep Guardiola's side the title.

Adopting the tune of a chant Liverpool fans used for Gerrard in his playing days, the song sung by City fans is less complimentary. It references the former midfielder slipping and gifting the ball to Demba Ba in what ended up being a devastating 2-0 defeat for Brendan Rodgers' Reds in 2014.

Some were none too pleased with the antics, with one calling it "tragic," though there were some who came out in support. However, actor and Liverpool fan Rahul Kohli was among those to take the positives rather than dwelling on the Reds' disappointment.

And a shout out to City for immediately breaking out into a Gerrard chant as they won the league," Kohli tweeted. "My salt levels evaporated, and were replaced with pride that we have the fans we have. So thanks for that I guess?"

While City were making life hard for themselves, Liverpool were forced to mount a comeback of their own at home to Wolves. Pedro Neto put the visitors in front inside five minutes, only for Jurgen Klopp's team to bounce back through goals from Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson.

"Congratulations to Man City and Pep Guardiola," the Liverpool boss said after the game, after Liverpool finished the season on 92 points and their rivals pipped them with 93. "Thank you to Aston Villa and Wolverhampton for making a proper game of it.

"It's not the result we wanted. It was a bit of a rollercoaster. I don't know the results exactly but I know they were 1-0 up - where they 2-0 up as well? Of course at the moment there's disappointment here as well.

"You can't do more than give your absolute best and that's what the boys did again. We chased the best team in the world to the wire, that's absolutely special. We'll build a team again and go again."
