Luton have chance to move clear of drop zone in crucial clash against Burnley

talksport.com, 11 January 2024, 16:14
Burnley and Luton will meet this Friday evening in a crucial clash at the bottom of the Premier League table, live on talkSPORT.

The Hatters are travelling to Turf Moor aiming to move out of the relegation zone and further clear of their relegation rivals.

Rob Edward's side have won two of their last three league games and that has seen them majorly boost their survival chances this season.

They'll now be aiming to claim another three points against the Clarets who have lost all but one game at home so far in the top flight.

Burnley vs Luton: Set-piece specialist

Alfie Doughty has become a key player for Luton this season, stepping up in the Premier League and coping well with the increase in quality.

The wing-back is a constant threat on the left and he has recently shown his talents from set pieces.

Doughty has created a total of 22 chances from set plays this campaign, providing four assists.

That's a record only bettered by James Ward-Prowse who is of course known for his set-piece prowess.

The 24-year-old is now attracting attention for his impressive performances in recent weeks, especially after starring in a 3-2 defeat to Chelsea in December.

If he can continue his fine form on Friday evening, he is likely to help his side move further away from their relegation rivals.

Burnley are unbeaten in their last seven league games against Luton (W4 D3), and are looking to complete their first league double over them since the 1994-95 second tier campaign.

Luton are unbeaten in their last seven away league games against Burnley (W3 D4) since a 2-1 defeat in March 1995 under David Pleat.

Burnley vs Luton: Team news

Both Charlie Taylor and Lyle Foster were withdrawn with injury concerns during Burnley's defeat to Tottenham in the FA Cup.

Taylor is said to have a 'chronic' shoulder issue while Foster is not thought to have sustained a serious problem and is likely to be fit.

Sander Berge is back from suspension, however, Luca Koleosho, Hjalmar Ekdal and Jordan Beyer all remain on the sidelines.

As for Luton, Issa Kabore is away at the Africa Cup of Nations for the next few weeks.

Marvelous Nakamba is set to miss out once again while Reece Burke and Dan Potts also continue their recovery from injuries.

Carlton Morris picked up a calf issue in the FA Cup against Bolton but he isn't expected to miss the game.

Burnley are hosting Luton in a top-flight match for the first time since January 1975, winning 1-0 thanks to a Billy Ingham strike.

There have been three Premier League games between the promoted sides (Burnley, Luton, Sheffield United) this season, which have seen a combined 13 goals. The average of 4.3 goals-per-game is the highest in matches between promoted clubs in a Premier League season.

Burnley vs Luton: What has been said?

Burnley midfielder Jacob Bruun Larsen knows this game has an extra edge to it with both teams fighting for survival in the Premier League.

He said: "Our mindset is the same as always but obviously it's a game where you want to win, like any other game, but this may have a little bit more.

"I won't say it - because it is kind of how it feels, that it means a little bit more. Even though it's the same three points against them it is against another team in the league.

"They are also where we are in the league, so it would be important for us to get the three points.

"Especially because we won against them in the last game away, and now, we play on our turf.

"So, I think that you'll definitely see a team that's going full out at Friday's game."

Burnley have lost 10 of the last 11 Premier League games in which they have conceded a goal, the only exception being a 1-1 draw at Brighton in December. However, their only league win this season in which they failed to keep a clean sheet was the reverse fixture away to Luton in October (2-1).

After their 3-2 win at Sheffield United on Boxing Day, Luton are looking to pick up back-to-back top-flight away victories for the first time since December 1987 under Ray Harford.
