Liverpool transfer news: Arne Slot could strike bargain £33.2m deal thanks to 'gentleman's agreement'

sportsmole.co.uk, 22 February 2025, 14:48
Manchester City and Liverpool-linked defender Jeremie Frimpong allegedly has a 'gentleman's agreement' enabling him to leave Bayer Leverkusen this summer.

Both the Citizens and the Reds could be on the hunt for full-back additions this summer, as Liverpool are still at risk of losing Trent Alexander-Arnold when his deal expires at the end of the season.

Arne Slot's side rebuffed an approach from long-term admirers Real Madrid in December, but Los Blancos are still keeping abreast of the situation and are free to engage in pre-contract talks with the Englishman.

Meanwhile, Man City are set to wave goodbye to Kyle Walker this summer, when he is expected to complete a permanent switch to AC Milan or another club, while John Stones - another option on the right - could be one of seven players sold.

The Premier League champions could soon be forced to concede defeat in their efforts to sign AC Milan's Theo Hernandez, who apparently favours a move to Real Madrid, while Juventus' Andrea Cambiaso might cost in the region of £66.3m.

Frimpong 'keen' on Premier League move for two years

However, an intriguing opportunity could arise in the shape of Leverkusen's Frimpong, who according to TEAMTalk has a 'gentleman's agreement' to leave the Bundesliga champions for a specific fee.

The former Celtic defender has apparently been keen to test himself in the Premier League for a couple of years, and both Liverpool and Man City may now be able to help him fulfil that dream for a relatively modest fee.

The report claims that Xabi Alonso's side will consider offers of just €40m (£33.2m) for the Netherlands international when the summer window rolls around, even though his contract runs for another three-and-a-half years.

While Real Madrid have also been credited with an interest in Frimpong, he would supposedly prefer to join a club in England over Spain, but Man City are currently in 'pole position' over Liverpool.

Frimpong for £33.2m: Too good to be true?

As Frimpong is valued at €50m (£41.4m) by transfermarkt, a £33.2m deal seems too good for either Liverpool or Man City to pass up, especially taking into account his exceptional attacking capabilities.

The Dutchman has had a direct hand in 67 goals in 176 appearances for Alonso's side - 28 of his own and 39 assists - including three goals and 10 helpers from 34 matches in the current campaign.

However, most of Frimpong's work has come as a wing-back as opposed to an out-and-out full-back, meaning that he may not slot seamlessly into City or Liverpool's four-at-the-back systems.

Nevertheless, the Reds in particular are said to admire Frimpong's versatility, giving rise to the idea that he could also operate on the right-hand side of the attack, either as Mohamed Salah's replacement or backup.
