While Liverpool are publicly insisting that their summer business is done, they appear to be continuing to pursue a move for Real Madrid star Marco Asensio.
Asensio has entered the final year of his contract at the Bernabeu, with Los Blancos thought to be ready to sell him if their valuation is met. The Spaniard has impressed since breaking into Madrid's first-team in 2017, following a series of loans.
His availability has now attracted potential suitors, with Liverpool thought to be one of them. They could still do with finding a replacement for Sadio Mane, who has joined Bayern Munich, despite the arrival of Darwin Nunez.
The man to take on that role could be Asensio and the winger's past comments suggests he could be the perfect man to join. Reds boss Jurgen Klopps is known for his use of rotation among his attacking players, with all of them spending some time on the bench over the course of the season.
That has led to flare-ups of frustration, on several occasions from Mane, which can impact team morale. There were also frequent rumours of somewhat of a feud between Mane and Salah during the former's time at Anfield.
Much of those rumours were based around the duo's goalscoring, but that is not something Liverpool will need to worry about with Asensio. Judging by his past comments, the Spaniard is happy to sacrifice himself for the wider team.
HAVE YOUR SAY! Would Marco Asensio be a good signing for Liverpool? Comment below.
"We are a team, we don't look at who scores the goal or gives the assist. We're all paddling in the same direction. My goal was another good goal, I was able to catch it well. I was there for the rebound and was able to put it in. It was a great goal," he said after scoring in a 2017 win over Las Palmas.
"Las Palmas are a good team, they have the ball a lot. We improved in the second half and we got forward more easily and were able to score those two goals. The Coach is confident in all the team and you can't always be a starter. You have to keep working and with games like this one, things will go well."
That selflessness would see Asensio slot in at Liverpool perfectly, given the demands that Klopp puts on his players. It would also mean that he gets on well with Salah, which would only be to the Reds' benefit as they chase trophies on four fronts.
Asensio has already been filling a similar role at Madrid, making 42 appearances in all competitions, a significant portion of which were as a sub. Salah may be hoping that Asesnio starts making those appearances in the red shirt of Liverpool, given that history.
And it is no surprise that the Reds have tabled an offer for the 26-year-old, though they face competition from AC Milan and Newcastle.
The three clubs now await an answer from the winger, who looks all but certain to depart the Bernabeu this summer.
