Liverpool pay tribute following death of former owner weeks after wife's passing

Liverpool have announced the death of former chairman and owner David Moores at the age of 76.

The Moores family held a stake in the club for over 50 years with David becoming owner of the Anfield outfit in 1991 before selling his majority stake in 2007. His death comes weeks just after his wife of 39 years, Marge, passed away.

The cause of his death is currently unknown but tributes have since been flooding in, with the Reds also penning touching message, confirming his passing to supporters. They concluded the message by offering their thoughts to Moores' family following the sad news of his death.

Liverpool icon Kenny Dalglish has also been one of the first to offer his condolences with a message on Twitter on behalf of himself and his wife. The former Reds player and manager wrote: "Marina and I are both very saddened by the passing of David Moores.

"He was a loyal Liverpool fan whose dream came true when he was appointed Chairman, & he did a tremendous amount to help the Club. Our condolences go to his family. He'll be greatly missed by all who knew him. RIP"

Jamie Carragher also followed up those sentiments with his own tribute. "RIP Mr Chairman. When I think of the good times I had a @LFC David Moores was at the heart of it. He will be sorely missed. Thank you for what you did for me & the club," he wrote.

Moores first became involved with the Reds when his family purchased a controlling stake in the club. He went on to become chairman in 1991 and alongside chief executive Rick Parry, played a key role in Liverpool's first venture into the newly-found Premier League less than a year later.

Throughout his 16-year stint at the helm, he oversaw a number of managerial appointments including the arrivals of Roy Evans, Gerard Houllier and Rafael Benitez.

That led to a period of huge success for the Merseyside club with ten major honours having been claimed including the famous Champions League comeback against AC Milan back in 2005. Moores elected to sell his stake in Liverpool in 2007 with a rapid influx of wealthy owners into the Premier League leaving the Reds needing further investment.

His involvement was not done there though with Moores being an ardent supporter of the club, as well as having been given honorary life president status. He returned to Anfield in December 2019 to witness the Reds' 5-2 thumping of fierce rivals Everton.

Current Liverpool CEO Peter Moore toasted his return to the club during that game with a touching message. He wrote: ""Another wonderful evening at Anfield, capped by being joined by David Moores and his wife Marge. Our Chairman from 1991-2007, this was his first visit back to Anfield in 10 years, and he was warmly welcomed by staff and former players. #YNWA"
