Liverpool could follow Gomez contract with two more deals as Klopp shapes squad

Naby Keita and Diogo Jota are in line for new contracts at Anfield as manager seeks to ensure squad is settled beyond the short-term ahead of new season Jurgen Klopp watches on as Liverpool continue their pre-season preparations

Liverpool could agree contract extensions with midfielder Naby Keita and forward Diogo Jota in the coming weeks as Jurgen Klopp aims to ensure his squad are settled beyond the short-term ahead of a renewed Premier League title charge.

Defender Joe Gomez has this afternoon signed a new five-year contract on improved wages five days after Mohamed Salah ended speculation about his future by announcing he is committed to the Anfield club until the summer of 2025.

And next up Liverpool are keen to extend Keita's stay as the Guinea midfielder enters the final year of his current contract. The 27-year-old has had a mixed time since signing from RB Leipzig for £54m four years ago but Klopp is keen to maximise his depth in all areas after last season's quadruple attempt underlined the need for fresh bodies.

Jota, meanwhile, is in line to receive a bumper pay rise having performed beyond expectations since his move from Wolves in 2020.

Speculation was rife that Gomez would ask to leave Anfield this summer after slipping down the pecking order in Klopp's defence following the arrival of Ibrahima Konate last season. But Klopp is keen for Gomez to stay and believes he will get plenty of opportunities in a Liverpool defence which saw action on all fronts last season as they chased a quadruple.

Newcastle, Aston Villa and Roma had all been linked with the 25-year-old and Villa boss Steven Gerrard is known to be a big admirer.

But with the defender out of contract at the end of 2024, new Anfield Sporting Director Julian Ward wanted to avoid a situation where his deal would have been wound down. Now Gomez is tied to the club until the summer of 2027.

"I think as a group, the sky is the limit," Gomez said after signing his deal. "We want to go one, if not two, better than last season and aim for it all. We definitely have the ability to do that and the belief is there, it's just about us taking it one game at a time, like we did last season, and just being true to ourselves, playing the way we play under the gaffer's guidance. Who is to say we can't go on to do more than we did last season?

"The opportunity to extend my stay here was an easy decision to make, really. Obviously, I have been here quite a while now, but in the grand scheme of things I still feel young and, like you say, the best years are ahead of me.

"I have got more to learn and the time to do that. I think I have the platform here to do it with the manager and the coaching staff around me and my teammates, to make sure the best years are ahead."
