Liverpool 0-0 West Ham: Carabao Cup quarter-final clash at Anfield underway

The Reds beat Bournemouth 2-1 thanks to a winner from Darwin Nunez to reach the last eight while the Hammers impressively overcame Arsenal.

David Moyes' side won 3-1 to knock out the Gunners and they'll be aiming to claim another 'Big Six' scalp this week.

Jurgen Klopp has one Carabao Cup trophy in his cabinet and a win here will move his side ever closer to picking up another piece of silverware.

He said: "I am trying to make sure we keep everyone fit and available as we can over this period.

"Nayef Aguerd is ill. Maxwel Cornet and Aaron Cresswell were ill, but the latter felt a bit better."

Since Darwin Nunez scored in a 2-1 Carabao Cup win over Bournemouth, he hasn't got a goal since.

That's ten matches in all competitions without one.

But despite this, there does seem to be a recognition that he's enjoying a better season and Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders defended him in the pre-match press conference.

He said: "Darwin is full of desire.

"You see that in each game, and if we would only judge players on the goals, that would be so unfair.

"I feel that there is a good connection between Mo [Salah] and Darwin, for example - the way they see each other, they assist each other.

"And, I feel above everything, that Darwin is playing a much better season than last year - the way how he defends for the team, the way how he controls the centre and at the same time puts the press on, the way he goes, the way how he chases back."

This is the first League Cup meeting between Liverpool and West Ham since the fourth round in 1988-89, with the Hammers winning 4-1 at Upton Park under John Lyall.

West Ham have won just one of their last 55 away games against Liverpool in all competitions (D14 L40), beating them 3-0 in the Premier League in August 2015.

Liverpool have won five of their last six League Cup quarter-final ties, with the exception being a 5-0 loss to Aston Villa in 2019-20 when most of the their first team were away at the Club World Cup.
