Little known Brexit-related rule could stop Marcus Rashford transfer

The Manchester United winger has been strongly linked with a move away from Old Trafford with talkSPORT reporting at the weekend that AC Milan have intensified their pursuit of him.

Rashford has fallen out of favour under Ruben Amorim and said last month that he is 'ready for a new challenge'.

Amongst the clubs to show an interest in the 27-year-old are Italian giants AC Milan.

Kyle Walker has also been linked with a move to the San Siro in recent days after asking to leave Manchester City.

However, Serie A registration rules mean Milan can only sign one of the two Englishmen.

Clubs are only permitted to register a maximum of two new non-EU players to their squad each season.

That number is limited to one unless a non-EU player leaves the club during the campaign.

With the United Kingdom leaving the European Union in 2020, English players are classed as non-EU in Serie A.

As a result, Milan can currently only register one of Rashford or Walker.

According to Ben Jacobs, the City full-back is the club's current preferred target.

Jacobs told The United Stand: "Although Milan are active on both deals, their preference and their push and their confidence, at the moment anyway, is all around Kyle Walker.

"Therefore, if he signs, it takes Milan out of the equation."

talkSPORT understands that Walker could join Real Madrid on loan for the rest of the season, which would breathe new life into Rashford's San Siro switch.

There remains interest in Rashford from elsewhere in Europe, though.

talkSPORT understands that Borussia Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl has held a meeting with Rashford's representatives, while Barcelona, Juventus and Monaco are said to be interested.

The Bundesliga side are understood to be exploring a loan deal until the end of the season.

Rashford was once again absent from the United squad for Sunday's FA Cup clash with Arsenal on Sunday.

He missed the match through illness as he did the club's previous match against Liverpool.

It means Rashford has now gone seven matches without appearing for the Red Devils, having been named on the bench just once in that time.

His last piece of action came away to Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League on December 12.
