Lampard ends 44-year Coventry wait in rapid transformation since taking charge

talksport.com, 1 February 2025, 17:38
Frank Lampard has guided Coventry to their first win against Swansea since 1981 to boost their unlikely play-off hopes.

First half goals from Ellis Simms and Brandon Thomas-Asante proved to be the difference in Wales in what was a perfect afternoon for the visitors.

Covenrty have now won their last four league matches under Lampard's tutelage.

It is the first time the club have achieved the feat since November 2022.

Lampard has worked wonders with the Sky Blues of late having taking charge in November.

The ex-Chelsea boss took over with Coventry in the midst of a relegation battle with the club sitting in 17th spot - two points above the drop zone.

Just two months later and the Midlands outfit are 14 clear of the bottom three and are now in an unlikely hunt to secure a top-six place.

They sit 11th in the table - just three points behind West Brom who occupy the last play-off place.

For Coventry fans, their 44-year long wait to see a league victory against Swansea is over having last claimed three points against them in October 1981.

In that time, Coventry had suffered eight losses to Swansea, while they had been held to a draw on ten occasions.

Meanwhile, Coventry had failed to win any of their last 12 away trips to Swansea, losing and drawn six times apiece.

But their was plenty to cheer about from fans on their recent trip to take on the Swans.

There was just 17 minutes on the clock when Simms broke the deadlock for his fourth Championship goal of the season.

The 24-year-old was picked out with a low cross from Thomas-Asante, where he expertly took a touch before volleying home.

Thomas-Asante then doubled the visitors' lead just before the break in a goal of the season contender.

He capitalised on a loose ball nearly 40 yards from goal before chipping the unsuspecting Lawrence Vigouroux.

Attention for Coventry will now turn towards their clash with league leaders Leeds on home soil next Wednesday night.

An FA Cup fourth round tie with Ipswich then follows as they look to reach Wembley for a second season having fell to Manchester United in the semi-finals last term.
