In their 3-2 victory over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday night, Liverpool lined up with a midfield trio of Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita and James Milner.
Usual starter Fabinho was isolating having been on international duty in Brazil, Thiago Alcantara and Curtis Jones are injured and Harvey Elliott is recovering from ankle surgery. Given those options, it would be no surprise to see manager Jurgen Klopp prioritising signing Youri Tielemans in the coming transfer windows.
Midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum left the club in the summer on a free transfer after his contract expired at Anfield.
The Dutchman was an integral part of the Reds' team during the five years he spent at the club, missing just eleven league fixtures overall during that time.
Jurgen Klopp may have been shown by his transfer target that he is willing to leave
Many thought that after the midfielder joined Paris Saint-Germain, Klopp would demand a replacement was purchased, but that was not the case.
Instead, the former Borussia Dortmund boss put faith in his squad and fringe players, but already the cracks are beginning to show and it is only a matter of time before he will need to make signing a midfielder a must.
According to 90min, Liverpool transfer target Tielemans rejected a contract extension from Leicester City earlier this week having previously refused to comment on whether his future lies with the Foxes or not.
There has been uncertainty recently as to whether Brendan Rodgers' side would be able to tie the former Monaco midfielder down on a bumper contract, his deal expires in 2023 and Leicester are in no rush to sell but they appear to be sure they won't lose him on a free at a later date.
Asked by Sky Sports about whether there was an update on his future, the 24-year-old said: "There's no update really. I'm open to everything. The transfer market has just closed, but I want to keep as many options as I can open,
"As long as I'm here I will give everything for the club. I've already done so, but I will do so even more. The contract situation is just something that is going on in football, it's a normal situation.
"There are talks going on - I'm not saying I'm going to sign, I'm not saying I'm not going to sign. We will see."
Tielemans has scored two and assisted two in eight appearances so far this season and been a key figure in the heart of the Foxes midfield, creating several chances per game but also helping out plenty defensively too.

The Belgium international looks the ideal player to slow into the Liverpool midfield and would flourish by being relieved of most of his defensive duty by Fabinho and Henderson, and his unwillingness to sign a contract extension should indicate to Klopp that he is keen to be approached for a move.
With a front three of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino with Diogo Jota as cover, Liverpool do not truly need a goalscorer from midfield and rather a top-quality supplier.
Thiago looked like he was going to be that man when he arrived from Bayern Munich in 2020, but he has struggled with injuries and for consistency, as has Naby Keita.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is reportedly considering leaving the club due to his lack of game time and Milner is also 35 so coming to the end of his career.

With Jones and Elliott both improving rapidly, adding Tielemans into the mix early could allow the trio to lay down the foundations for years of future success.
However, Liverpool won't be alone in their interest in the midfielder and may be forced to pay a
significant transfer fee to secure his signature in order to see off interest from top clubs around Europe; he is valued by transfermarkt at £49.5million.
