Klopp details Liverpool thought process ahead of final day title showdown

Jurgen Klopp has opened up on what the message will be for the Liverpool players before the final day of a Premier League season that could still end in the ultimate success for the Reds.

Manchester City go into the last match-week boasting a slender one-point advantage over their title rivals, who ensured the pressure will remain on Pep Guardiola's men until the final day of the season with an impressive 2-1 win away from home at Southampton.

Liverpool welcome Wolves to Anfield knowing all they can do is beat Bruno Lage's side and hope for the result at the Etihad to go their way. City take on an Aston Villa side at home led by Anfield legend Steven Gerrard who will be desperate to help out his former side with a shock result in Manchester.

Reflecting on how the club will approach their last game of the season, Klopp explained: "We all know. We never gave up. We'll give it a try, It's our home game, last home game of season.

"The atmosphere will be outstanding. We'll try to use it. We have to do our job. Football is a tricky game sometimes. Aston Villa play on Thursday and then Sunday. We'll see but you have to focus on yourselves."

Klopp was pressed for comment as to whether he feels Liverpool's chances of a second league title in three season are slim. "Of course it is unlikely because City play at home against Aston Villa, who play only on Thursday," the German admitted.

"It will be tough against Burnley, they fight for survival. But it is football. I think the time when City became champion [in 2019] it was because of 11 millimetres. If someone wants us to be champion then we have to win first and Aston Villa need to get a point at City.

Klopp refused to end on a pessimistic note however, and issued a rally cry to everyone associated with the club to not give up hope of a remarkable victory just yet - by reminding them - "It is possible, not likely but possible. That is enough."

His sentiments were echoed by veteran versatility man James Milner, who told Sky Sports Liverpool will: "Try and win our game. That's all we can do and that is what we have been trying to do since January after being so far behind and we went for it again in January and had a mental reset if you like, and since then we have really pushed."

Milner did issue City with some praise before again issuing some optimism. "They are an incredible team to go up against this season, and I think we have done ourselves proud this season but we have won today, and tried to keep the pressure on Manchester City ahead of the weekend."
