Klopp: Liverpool were close to winning Premier League title, but in the end not close enough

Liverpool will go into the Champions League final knowing they can no longer win either the quadruple or the traditional treble, with Jurgen Klopp confirming that whilst his team were close to Manchester City, they just weren't close enough as the Premier League title went to the Etihad Stadium on the final day of the season.

Liverpool were able to defeat Wolverhampton Wanderers, keeping their side of the bargain on a dramatic final matchday, yet it was the sublime turnaround in Manchester that saw City overturn a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 against Aston Villa, which swung the title back to Pep Guardiola.

"We were close but, in the end, not close enough," Klopp told Sky Sports.

"You can't do more than give your absolute best and that's what the boys did, I couldn't be more proud.

"We had to chase the best team in the world to the wire but we will go again, we will build the team again and go again."

Whilst the Champions League final will be a chance for Liverpool to cap a memorable campaign, Klopp feels that domestic disappointment will serve as further motivation for his squad.

"This season is incredible and will end next week, we have five days to prepare for the Champions League final," he added.

"We face an incredibly experienced team but that's okay.

"Losing the league today increased the desire to put it right next week."
