Kai Havertz compared to Mesut Ozil after "looking lazy" in Champions League

Chelsea's £70m man Kai Havertz has been singled out for criticism by former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch after his "disappointing" display during Wednesday night's 1-0 defeat at Juventus.

Havertz lasted the full 90 as Thomas Tuchel's side succumbed to their second successive loss after Saturday's defeat by title rivals Manchester City.

Despite being often touted as one of the most gifted playmakers of his generation, Havertz failed to break down a resilient Juventus side who spent much of the second half sitting on their lead.

Federico Chiesa notched the only goal of the game just eleven seconds after the restart, before Chelsea went on to enjoy the majority of possession without really threatening their hosts until late on.

The latter stages of the game saw both record signing Romelu Lukaku and Havertz spurn glorious opportunities to level things up.

Dissecting the game as part of his punditry duties on BT Sport, Crouch discussed both the pros and cons of Havertz playing style.

"I thought Ziyech and Havertz were very disappointing. I think Havertz reminds me of Ozil", Crouch explained.

"He does things where it comes easy to him and he looks technically brilliant. But he can also look lazy and laboured at times and he can frustrate you and I thought tonight they were frustrating."

Having arrived in West London this time last year, Havertz's Chelsea career thus far is best defined as hit and miss, moments of his mercurial talent all too rare amid lengthy spells of poor form.

Given his astronomical price tag, expectations of Havertz are high among the Chelsea faithful, though the jury is still out.

Some will claim his price tag was justified the moment he scored the only goal of the game in last season's Champions League final against Man City.

Once Havertz' strike handed Chelsea the second Champions League title in their history, many had hoped he would kick on and deliver on a more regular basis - that has not been the case.

The German international has featured in all but one of Chelsea's ten games across all competitions this season, but has started the last two against Man City and Aston Villa on the bench.

Crouch went on to claim that Mason Mount's inclusion makes Chelsea a better side, appearing to suggest the fact Mount works harder makes him a more important player than Havertz.

"He [Mount] has the same quality as those boys but there's more urgency.

'Tactically, he gets back in, he potentially works harder - he looks like he works harder. I think that's the difference."
