Jurgen Klopp's fury with referee Craig Pawson after Liverpool defeat at West Ham

mirror.co.uk, 7 November 2021, 20:15
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp felt West Ham's opening goal should have been disallowed, claiming Alisson was fouled moments before he punched the ball into his own net

Jurgen Klopp was left furious with referee Craig Pawson after watching Liverpool surrender their 25 game unbeaten run.

Liverpool boss Klopp insisted Aaron Cresswell should have been sent off and West Ham 's first goal disallowed for a foul by Angelo Ogbonna on keeper Alisson Becker.

Klopp admitted his team lost control of the game but was clearly unhappy with the key decisions after their shock defeat to West Ham.

"It was a clear foul on Alisson," said Klopp. "How can that not be a foul? Every goalkeeper in the world needs some protection but instead they can be feeling the loneliest player on the pitch.

HAVE YOUR SAY! Should West Ham's first goal have been disallowed? Let us know your thoughts

"Ogbonna hits the arm of Alisson, that is a decisive piece of the body of the goalkeeper. How it cannot be a foul I don't know but we have to accept these things.

"If we got something we would have deserved it but we didn't get it so we accept the defeat."

Klopp was also fuming that Cresswell did not see red for a challenge on Jordan Henderson. "It's a clear red card. They will probably say that he got the ball but it was a reckless challenge."

Klopp suggested Pawson relied on VAR as a fall back option for his own mistakes but said that does not work because the video referee Stuart Attwell will only overrule if there is an obvious mistake.

When asked whether refs are using VAR as a back-up, Klopp said: "Not all refs, but he does. He just looks at the situation and says: 'OK, let's see what they say.' He did that today, definitely.

"There is a problem because they don't give a foul but then the VAR has to look for a clear and obvious mistake.

"We had a really long run without a defeat, we didn't really think about it as too many draws, that run is over good now we can think about starting another.

"I hope no-one runs away with it because we are not one of the teams able to do that at the moment.

"We have to win football games. I know I cannot think we cannot lose football games but today I felt it was unnecessary because we had control of the game before we gave control away for no reason."
