Jurgen Klopp congratulates Pep Guardiola as Man City beat Liverpool to title

Liverpool were pipped to the Premier League title again by Pep Guardiola's Manchester City despite a dramatic final day of the season almost sending the trophy to Anfield

Jurgen Klopp congratulated Pep Guardiola and Manchester City on their Premier League title triumph as his Liverpool side ultimately came up short on the final day of the season.

Liverpool came from one down at Anfield to beat Wolves 3-1 thanks to goals from Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson on a dramatic afternoon, but it wasn't enough to pip City to the crown as Guardiola's men produced a stunning comeback of their own to overcome Steven Gerrard's Aston Villa.

Two goals from Ilkay Gundogan and one from Rodri saw City overturn a two-nil deficit after Matty Cash and Philippe Coutinho had put Villa in command and had Liverpool fans dreaming of a final day upset, only to be dashed as the title went back to the Etihad again.

Speaking after the game, Klopp said: "Congratulations to Man City and Pep Guardiola. Thank you to Aston Villa and Wolverhampton for making a proper game of it. It's not the result we wanted. It was a bit of a rollercoaster. I don't know the results exactly but I know they were 1-0 up - where they 2-0 up as well? Of course at the moment there's disappointment here as well.

"If it's 5-0 to City after 10 minutes it's just a normal game for us. It wasn't our best game either, but it's all good. 92 points is absolutely incredible. We wanted it all, but now it's OK. [Finishing second] is the story of my life. I'm still record holder for not getting promoted in Germany with the highest points tally. You need to get more points than any other teams, but we didn't do that.

"You can't do more than give your absolute best and that's what the boys did again. We chased the best team in the world to the wire, that's absolutely special. We'll build a team again and go again."

Guardiola was reduced to tears on the sideline at the final whistle after being put through a whole range of emotions in City's finale and paid tribute to the challenge Liverpool have given them. "In your rival I have never seen a team like Liverpool in my life," he said. "They help us to be a better team season by season."

Will Liverpool complete the treble? Have your say in the comments below.

That will be scant consolation for Klopp, though the Reds boss can be content with an incredible season from his team which has seen them claim the Carabao Cup, FA Cup and miss out on the title by just a point, while still having a Champions League final to come next week.

"I am proud. It's been an incredible season. Exceptional," he said in his post-match press conference. "The game today showed so much about these boys. The early girl was a knock and we didn't play football like we usually played and you still find a way. Absolutely outstanding. 92 points is crazy. Yes, I'm proud."

Asked about City's win, he replied: "It's not completely unexpected, obviously. We said before the game that a lot of things have to happen. We were close but not close enough. If you stay on track and you keep going, you get the reward. Today, not the maximum award but we will get it"

Asked whether he would have won two more titles without Man City, he admitted: "Yes, it's not unlikely."

Klopp will now look ahead to next Saturday's showdown with Real Madrid as they bid to seal an impressive treble. "We have five days, we will prepare for that final," he added. "That's what we do. We will face an incredibly experienced team but that's okay. We will have increased desire to set it right next week."
