Adelaide United player Josh Cavallo has praised Jake Daniels for his bravery after the Blackpool midfielder became the first male professional football player in the UK to come out as gay since 1990.
Cavallo had previously become the only openly gay man to be playing top-flight football worldwide when he came out back in October 2021.
"As myself and Adelaide United prepare for the A-League semi-final, I want to stop and take a moment to acknowledge Jake's announcement and say how very proud I am for his bravery," Cavallo said.
"It's a wonderful feeling knowing that my story has helped guide Jake to be his true self.
"It's touching to see the millions of people that my story has impacted and inspired around the world, and to see it help evolve the world game at all levels, is fantastic. This world and the game of football has a place for everyone. Love will always win."
Jake Daniels' remarks
Harry Kane and David de Gea were just two of the players who expressed their support towards the 17-year-old, who revealed that he is gay on Monday.
"For a long time I've thought I would have to hide my truth because I wanted to be, and now I am, a professional footballer," Daniels said.
"I asked myself if I should wait until I've retired to come out. No other player in the professional game here is out.
"However, I knew that would lead to a long time of lying and not being able to be myself or lead the life that I want to. Since I've come out to my family, my club and my teammates, that period of overthinking everything and the stress it created has gone.
"I am hoping that by coming out I can be a role model, to help others come out if they want to. I am only 17 but I am clear that this is what I want to do and if, by me coming out, other people look at me and feel maybe they can do it as well, that would be brilliant. If they think: 'This kid is brave enough do this, I will be able to do it too.'"
