January deadline day 2025: The biggest transfers that could still happen

sportsmole.co.uk, 3 February 2025, 06:45
As the January 2025 transfer window draws to its conclusion, excitement is building across the football world in anticipation of the dramatic final hours of the winter deadline day.

Despite having at least a full month to strengthen their squads or move players on, many clubs often find themselves scrambling in the final hours to secure last-minute deals that could prove pivotal in defining the remainder of their seasons.

That seems to be the case once again this year, with several high-profile transfers still up in the air as the countdown ticks towards its final moments.

Here, Sports Mole takes a look at some of the biggest transfers that could still materialise on the January 2025 transfer deadline day.

Mathys Tel (Bayern Munich)

News around a potential move for Bayern Munich's Tel has been swirling over the past days, with the 19-year-old reportedly looking for a move away from the German side due to his lack of playing time this season.

The forward has played just 344 minutes for Bayern Munich across their Bundesliga and Champions League campaigns, failing to find the net in that time, leading to Tel looking for opportunities elsewhere.

Tottenham Hotspur are believed to have had an offer in the region of €60m (£50m) accepted by Bayern Munich, only for Tel to make it clear that he was not interested in joining the Lilywhites.

Speculation persists over his potential destination, with Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal all heavily linked to the forward, and a deal in the closing stages of the transfer window is highly likely to take place.

The German club are understood to have already turned down a straight loan approach from Man Utd, meaning any deal that does materialise is anticipated to be a permanent transfer or include an obligation to buy.

Marcus Rashford (Manchester United)

Rashford has been cast aside since Ruben Amorim's arrival at Man United, only featuring in the matchday squad - remaining an unused substitute - in one of Man United's last 13 fixtures.

The Red Devils are understood to be aiming for a loan deal with an obligation to buy for the forward, and several top clubs from across the continent are said to be interested in his services.

Aston Villa appear to be the favourites for his signature, having supposedly reached an agreement with Man Utd, but the door remains open for a late move from Barcelona, who reportedly need to offload Ansu Fati before negotiating a deal for the Englishman.

Leon Bailey (Aston Villa)

Potentially heading the other way in a separate deal, Bailey has been identified as one of several options that Man Utd are weighing up to help bolster their attacking options.

After scoring 10 and assisting nine in 2072 Premier League minutes last campaign, the Jamaican international has failed to reach those same heights this term, contributing only one goal and two assists in 1047 league minutes.

With the arrival of Donyell Malen and the return of Jacob Ramsey from injury, Bailey is likely to see his minutes further limited for the remainder of the season, making a move to Manchester United an increasingly appealing option for the winger.

Marco Asensio (Paris Saint-Germain)

Aston Villa have been busy in the January window, already securing deals for Malen and Andres Garcia, while Emiliano Buendia, Jaden Philogene, Diego Carlos and Jhon Duran have departed the club, but the Villans are reportedly not done there.

Unai Emery's men are understood to have reached an agreement with Man United for the loan deal of Rashford, while they are also separately working on securing the services of Asensio from PSG.

Asensio has played only 24 minutes in PSG's last 14 matches across all competitions, remaining an unused substitute on 11 occasions, but the Spaniard could be about to play a much larger part in Aston Villa's season if the deal is to take place.

Axel Disasi (Chelsea)

Another player on the peripherals at his respective club, Disasi has struggled for consistent gametime since the arrival of Enzo Maresca at Stamford Bridge.

The defender has played just 365 Premier League minutes this term, featuring on only six occasions, and the central defender will reportedly be allowed to leave the Blues in this window.

A number of clubs are said eyeing Disasi, with Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers showing interest, while Tottenham Hotspur, who have recently signed Kevin Danso, are also in talks for a loan deal.
