Jamie Carragher has the last laugh after Gary Neville's Liverpool tweets

Gary Neville was left red-faced once again last night after his tweets mocking Liverpool's performance against AC Milan backfired spectacularly.

Liverpool's rollercoaster night at Anfield saw them eventually win 3-2, but only after they had surrendered a 1-0 lead and missed a penalty.

The Reds flew out of the blocks and Fikayo Tomori's unfortunate own goal from Trent Alexander-Arnold's cross put them ahead after just nine minutes.

It could have been 2-0 five minutes later but Mohamed Salah saw his powerful penalty saved by Mike Maignan after Andy Robertson's shot struck an arm inside the box.

Having dominated the opening stages, Liverpool were then hit by a sucker-punch, Ante Rebic and Brahim Diaz scoring in a two-minute spell to turn the game on its head before half-time.

It was at this point that former Manchester United defender Neville sprung into action, taking selfies on the sofa to try to poke fun at Liverpool.

Rebic's side-footed finish in the 42nd minute was followed by a picture of Neville staring at the camera and an eyes emoji, while one of him laughing came two minutes later when Diaz converted from close range on the counter-attack.

Neville's tweets, to his 4.7million followers, were always likely to provoke a reaction if Liverpool responded after the break - and that is exactly what happened.

Salah made up for his penalty miss by tucking away from Divock Origi's chipped pass and Jordan Henderson won it with a sweetly-struck half-volley from the edge of the box.

And like clockwork, Jamie Carragher swooped to take the mickey out of his Sky Sports colleague on Twitter.

The former Liverpool defender first posted the picture of Neville laughing with a crumpled filter alongside: "@Gnev2 when that goal went in" before adding another at full-time for good measure.

Quote-tweeting Neville's reaction he added: "Another great game between #LIVACM in the #ChampionsLeague."

That completed the second time in a week Neville was left with egg on his face because of his social media activity.

The 46-year-old got carried away with Cristiano Ronaldo's opening goal for United against Young Boys on Tuesday, posting a video of himself giggling manically, only for his former side to slip to an embarrassing 2-1 defeat in Switzerland.

He later sent Carragher a picture of himself with his hand over his face, which his colleague proudly displayed as his profile picture briefly.

It was yet another incident in a busy week on social media for Neville, who attracted attention on Monday for his debate with Carragher over Ronaldo's legacy.

Neville argued that Ronaldo is the greatest player of all time, while Carragher put forward the argument for Lionel Messi.
