Inside Masters Football's feisty return as Liverpool faced Man Utd in final

Masters Football has been revived as legendary Manchester United, Liverpool, Rangers and Celtic players battled it out in Glasgow on to lift the trophy on Friday evening David Thompson and Jamie Carragher got their hands on the trophy

Those of us old enough will have fond memories of Masters Football, a six-a-side indoor competition involving legendary footballers playing for versions of their former clubs.

Masters Football originally ran on Sky Sports between 2000 and 2011 before it was cancelled due to dwindling audiences. For years, fans have campaigned for the competition to be revived... and online streaming platform 360 Sports TV have answered their calls.

The latest edition of Masters Football was held in Glasgow on Friday with several football icons aged 35 or over - including Jamie Carragher, Robbie Fowler, Carlton Cole, Stiliyan Petrov, John O'Shea, Barry Ferguson and Louis Saha - taking part in the fun.

Four prestigious clubs competed in Friday's competition - Liverpool, Manchester United, Celtic and Rangers - with games lasting for 16 minutes (eight minutes per half). The teams played each other once and the two with the most points progressed to the final.

With two sets of rivals involved, it was always going to be a tasty affair in Glasgow. There were a couple of clashes throughout the evening - as ex-footballers never lose that competitive edge - but it no one crossed the line in front of the sell-out crowd.

The first fixture of the night was between Liverpool and Rangers... with some dubbing the clash the "Steven Gerrard Derby". There was a round of applause for the late, great Andy Goram before the first game. The Scotland legend sadly passed away earlier this month.

Do you remember the original Masters Football? Let us know in the comments below!

Carragher, a man who loves to play the pantomime villain, was booed by the Glasgow crowd early on. Yet he had the last laugh as Liverpool hammered Rangers 6-2. Luis Garcia was the star of the show, scoring four goals in the tournament opener.

United then got their campaign underway with a 2-1 victory against Celtic... and there was more misery for the Glasgow club as Liverpool defeated them by the same scoreline in the second game. Carragher's side now had the final in sight.

There was a feisty atmosphere in the next match with team-mates Barry Ferguson and Kenny Miller embroiled in a war of words! Thankfully for Rangers, their spat didn't stop them beating United 4-2 to keep their hopes of reaching the final alive.

Another heated affair followed as Celtic and Rangers faced each other in front of a vibrant Glasgow crowd. The game finished 2-2, knocking Celtic out of the tournament. Rangers didn't reach the final, though, as United defeated Liverpool 4-2 in last group clash.

That set up a final between the same two teams and it was Liverpool who lifted the trophy - shaped like the FA Cup - in Glasgow. The Reds defeated bitter rivals United 5-3 in the final with goals from Fowler, David Thompson, Jermaine Pennant, Stewart Downing and Garcia. The latter was named Man of the Tournament for inspiring his team to glory.

The Red Devils did give Liverpool a difficult game as Saha equalised to make it 1-1 and Danny Webber scored to make it 3-3, yet the Merseyside club just had too much class on this occasion. Will United avenge their defeat next time out? It'll be fascinating to see.
