The sound of the legendary broadcaster filled living rooms across the country for over 25 years before he called time on the role at the end of last season.
The statistician wowed fans with his in-depth knowledge of teams and players throughout a multitude of leagues across the UK.
Stelling's planning ahead of his Saturday afternoon duties was a meticulous process spanning the entire week - and in one case, months and years.
"I used to follow a guy called Josh McEachran who played for Chelsea and then Brentford and I noticed he hadn't scored in 80 games," Stelling told talkSPORT Breakfast on Friday.
"So I made a little note saying McEachran, '0 in 80' then the next week 81, 82 and this went on for three years - in 188.

"I thought one day I'm going to punch the air on Soccer Saturday and say Josh McEachran has scored his first ever goal and would you believe it, his 189th game was on a Tuesday night and I was sitting at home watching Julian Warren because they had the Soccer Special.
"It came through on the vidiprinter, Brentford 1 Birmingham - McEachran. I couldn't believe it. Anyway, he scored his first goal in 189 and how sad is this? He's now scored 1 in 331!"
Stelling was speaking ahead of his debut as talkSPORT Breakfast host on Monday December 4.
He will present alongside former Scotland and Rangers striker Ally McCoist on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

The 68-year-old replaces Laura Woods, who called time on her stint as the show's host earlier this year.
The Hartlepool United fan has promised to bring passion to the show and promises to express his forthright opinions on all things football.

"If anybody has watched Soccer Saturday over the years, they will know that I love football," he added. "I've got a passion for football, I've got a passion for all sports, pretty much all sports anyway.
"So, I hope [listeners] will get that passion, people will know I'm an opinionated so and so.
"There will be opinions expressed as well. I think the important thing is to have a bit of fun and put a smile on peoples faces."
