Hungary assistant gives update after medical emergency during game

talksport.com, 16 November 2024, 21:16
Hungary assistant coach Adam Szalai insists he's 'doing well' after being involved in a medical emergency mid-game.

Szalai fell ill in concerning scenes during Hungary's Nations League clash against the Netherlands in Amsterdam.

Just seven minutes had been played of the Nations League match when the medical emergency took place.

Hungary captain and Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai was left in tears as Szalai received treatment.

Coaches and players responded to the urgent situation while medical staff sprung into action to treat the man in question.

Former striker and Hungary captain Szalai retired from playing in July following a career that saw him represent Basel, Mainz, Hannover, Hoffenheim and Schalke, as well as the reserve teams of Stuttgart and Real Madrid.

Players formed a protective shield around the Hungary bench as he was treated by medics, while fans fell into a hushed silence as they awaited news on the emergency.

The 36-year-old fortunately regained consciousness - with witnesses suggesting he suffered some form of seizure.

Szalai was then taken away to hospital, with the game resuming after a ten-minute delay.

An official statement from Hungary said: "Ádám Szalai is stable, he is conscious.

"Few minutes ago he was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Amsterdam for examination".

In a social media post on Sunday, Szalai assured fans that he was on the road to recovery.

"Thanks for the lots of messages, I'm doing well," he said.

Hungary captain Szoboszlai eventually decided, along with his teammates, that the game should continue.

The incident comes just months after Barnabas Varga was taken the hospital after a sickening collision in Hungary's clash with Scotland at Euro 2024.

Hungary found themselves 2-0 down in the first half of the clash with the Netherlands thanks to two penalties.

Wout Weghorst opened the scoring from the spot after 21 minutes of the game.

VAR had awarded the penalty for an incident that took place before the match was halted.

Weghorst celebrated with a knee slide and he was slammed for that celebration.

Ex-Netherlands international Rafael van der Vaart said: "When you score and cheer like that... it gives me a stomach ache. A little subdued would have been appropriate."

Liverpool's Cody Gakpo then doubled the lead in the 13th minute of first-half injury time to put the Dutch firmly in control.

Things got even worse after the break when Denzel Dumfries made it 3-0 to the hosts, before Teun Koopmeiners wrapped up the one-sided win.
