How Salah's 2011 'dream' of playing for Newcastle could finally come true

Liverpool and Mohamed Salah have not reached an agreement on a potential contract renewal, which means that the Egypt international could depart the Reds on a free transfer next summer.

Salah's contract runs until June 2023, but the two parties have not managed to strike a deal despite negotiations over an extension having begun several months ago.

According to The Athletic, Salah is keen to stay in the Premier League even if he doesn't renew his contract with the Reds before next summer.

Should Salah decide to stay in England, there will be various potential suitors who could make a move for the Liverpool star.

Salah's 'dream' move to Newcastle

One of the teams who could approach him come January, when he'll be free to negotiate a move, could be Newcastle, who were taken over by a Saudi-led consortium last year and who splashed out money to strengthen their squad in the winter transfer window.

Salah came close to joining the Magpies back in 2011, when he was plying his trade for Al Mokawloon. The Egyptian forward had revealed back then that Newcastle were preparing an offer to sign him for a season.

"Newcastle will soon make an official offer to sign me for one season," Salah told Ahram Online at the time.

"I don't think Contractors will refuse to let me play in the English Premier League.

"It's a dream for any player to play in one of the strongest league competitions in the world.

"I want to play abroad, I think this would be my next step."

However, Salah didn't end up at Newcastle. Instead, he joined Basel in 2012 and two years later he was signed by Chelsea. He didn't manage to establish himself at the Blues and moved to Roma on a permanent deal in 2016.

After shining in Rome, Salah joined Liverpool in the summer of 2017. The Egyptian star has won a Premier League title with the Reds and has led the team to three Champions League finals, coming out victorious on one occasion.

Now, more than a decade on, there is a chance he could finally end up at St James' Park.
