Hoffenheim have only made better starts to a Bundesliga season under Julian Nagelsmann and Alfred Schreuder than they have this year with new boss Andre Breitenreiter. The Sinsheimers have 18 points on the board and begin Matchday 13 in seventh place, but have won just one of their last six league assignments. That was a 3-0 victory at Schalke, which club record goalscorer Andrej Kramaric missed with an ankle injury. The Croatian, who is nine goals away from a Bundesliga century, has only been among the substitutes for the last two games, the 2-0 loss to Bayern Munich and 1-1 draw at Cologne, but could come back in now. Centre-back Ozan Kabak was sent off for a second yellow in that game last Sunday and so will watch this one from the stands, having been an ever-present this season until his dismissal. Kevin Vogt also hobbled off last time out and is yet to train, so another change is expected to a defence that also includes Leipzig loanee Angelino at wing-back.
The Spaniard's parent club are a point and place ahead in the Bundesliga table and full of confidence on the back of a 10-game unbeaten run across competitions. Nkunku was on target once again on Wednesday - for the fourth match in a row and 14th time this season - as Leipzig beat Shakhtar Donetsk 4-0 to secure progress to the UEFA Champions League knockout stage. Nkunku has been helped of late by Timo Werner, who was also on target in the 2-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen and 3-2 success against Real Madrid, but suffered ankle ligament damage that rules him out until next year. Benjamin Henrichs is suspended, so Mohamed Simakan will definitely continue at right-back, while it's another shootout between Josko Gvardiol and Abdou Diallo to partner stand-in captain Willi Orban. Dani Olmo is also an option in attack as he continues his comeback to full fitness.
Match stats
Kramaric and Robert Skov are Hoffenheim's next best for goals (both three) in 2022/23, after the four-goal Munas Dabbur.
Angelino made 68 Bundesliga appearances for parent club Leipzig. He's put in a joint-league-high 41 crosses so far this season (as many as VfB Stuttgart counterpart Borna Sosa).
Only Union Berlin (nine) and Bayern (10) have conceded fewer goals than Hoffenheim's 13 so far this term. It's their best defensive record after 12 matches for 11 years.
Nkunku has scored a Bundesliga-leading 22 goals in 2022. He needs one more to equal the Leipzig club record, held by Werner, for most goals in a calendar year.
David Raum had a hand in 14 goals for Hoffenheim last season. He has one assist to show for his first 11 Bundesliga appearances in a Leipzig shirt.
Leipzig are eight away Bundesliga matches without a win. Eleven is their longest top-flight barren run on the road (2021).
