HSV are just one step away from what would be a seventh DFB Cup final, and fans of Der Dino will feel fortune is on their side this season as they look to reach the Berlin showpiece. Tim Walter's team have advanced past the three previous rounds via penalty shootout victories, while the side they vanquished in the quarter-finals, Karlsruhe, were swept aside in a convincing 3-0 home win at the weekend in Bundesliga 2. Jatta set up top scorer Robert Glatzel for the opener in that game. Midfielder Ludovit Reis missed it due to suspension but is available for the last-four encounter at a sold-out Volksparkstadion. Die Rothosen are three-time DFB Cup winners and have won both previous encounters in the competition, while they also hold the edge in their overall head-to-head against Freiburg, winning 16 of the sides 39 encounters compared to the visitors' 15.
For their part, Freiburg will be keen to prevent their opponents becoming the first second-division team to reach the final since 2011 by making it to their first-ever showpiece. Christian Streich's side put paid to Bochum after extra-time in the last eight and, just like their semi-final opponents, enjoyed a weekend fillip with victory against the same opponents on Saturday. Lukas Kübler's opener was followed by a Roland Sallai double as the Black Forest outfit maintained their hopes of a top-four finish with their own 3-0 win. Freiburg were again deprived of defensive midfielder Yannik Keitel (broken toe) and Kevin Schade (abdominals) for that victory. Streich also has to decide whether to stick with Nils Petersen from the start or keep his super-sub in reserves. Either way, he will be hopeful his side can show the same "force and steadfastness" in Tuesday's semi-final as they did when beating Bochum with a last-minute extra-time goal back in March's quarter-final encounter.
Match stats
Glatzel has four goals in this season's competition. He's currently on 22 league and cup goals for the campaign.
Three-time winners Hamburg have lost their last four DFB Cup semi-finals, most recently going out 3-1 to RB Leipzig in 2018/19.
However, HSV have won their two previous cup meetings with Freiburg (at the second-round stage in 1983/84 and 2007/08).
Petersen has scored 11 goals in 14 DFB Cup appearances for Freiburg, including one in the previous round.
Vincenzo Grifo has three DFB Cup goals this season, and is Freiburg's 11-goal top scorer in all competitions. He also has seven assists.
Freiburg are bidding to reach their first major final. Streich was coach when they reached their maiden semi-final, losing 2-1 to VfB Stuttgart in the 2012/13 DFB Cup.
