Grealish would reprise his England role at Man City - so he should stay at Villa

mirror.co.uk, 19 July 2021, 17:17
The Aston Villa star saw his role reduced to that of a super-sub for his country at the Euros, but he is much, much better than that and deserves to start regularly

I saw Jack Grealish at Wembley right after the Euros Final and he was gutted that England had lost, but in good spirits.

And no wonder.

At the Euros he confirmed what many of us believed... that he can be a very influential player for England; that he can open doors and create at international level, and is one of our nation's top talents.

True, he must have been hurt that he didn't play as much as he wanted. Gareth Southgate regarded him as an impact sub rather than a nailed on starter.

However at least he's proved himself effective, making big contributions at key moments.

To think, three months ago he wasn't even certain of a place in Southgate's squad, so that is progress.

So where does Jack turn now? A big-money deal to Manchester City? Stay at Villa and be their main man?

Well, if he's having second thoughts about a potential City move, good for him.

Villa is his home and everyone knows he'd happily stay and get the club back into Europe. Maybe get to a cup final and win.

I know I'm biased and love Villa to do well and build around Jack, but I do ask myself: why go to City?

He'd only play a fraction of the 70 games a season City can end up playing, like for instance Riyad Mahrez after he joined from Leicester.

But great players, unique individuals like Jack, want to play every game and pull the strings. Or just play in even 80% of the biggest games.

I don't think being at City would guarantee that.

You could argue that by not moving clubs Jack would lose out on the chance to win trophies. Maybe he'd get a decent pay rise.

Being at the Champions might end up in Southgate seeing him in a different light.

More of a cog in a ruthless team effort, competing in the Champions League, than the image he has of being a maverick talent at an upper mid-table club.

Where would Grealish fit into City's side? Comment your XI below.

I fear Jack would end up with the same frustrations as he faces with England at the Euros - which, by the way, he bottled up well.

I am sure there was part of him cursing, wanting to be on the field more, playing his part, even taking one of those penalties in the final, but left unpicked.

He proved himself a team player on and off the pitch, despite being personally itching to do more.

The new owners at Villa have deep enough pockets not to sell. They see him as the future.

Jack needs to play.

At City, Kevin De Bruyne is the go-to man. They have many options in the attacking midfield role.

They need an all-out striker. The way Jack plays wouldn't always be dynamic enough for City.

Also, he needs five or six games to play into a season.

I say to Jack, don't be happy with being a super-sub. It weighs too heavily having to come on with 20, ten or eight minutes to go.

If a top-four club buys Grealish they need to think of him in the same way as City think of De Bruyne. I don't think Pep would see him as more than a Mahrez or even a Sterling, important but not the top men.

So this summer I'd say: "Stay at home Jack."
