Gomez gives view on Alexander-Arnold criticism and 'frank' dressing room talk

Joe Gomez has come to the defence of Liverpool teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold insisting criticism of the right-back isn't 'fair'.

And Gomez added the defender is working hard every day in training in his bid to eradicate any mistakes from his game.

Alexander-Arnold has been accused of switching off at times, where he has allowed his marker to get the better of him at the back post.

His displays have come under the microscope with the Merseyside outfit languishing in eighth spot in the table following Saturday's 1-0 defeat away at Nottingham Forest.

The 24-year-old also hasn't been as effective in the final third of the pitch compared to last season.

He has chipped in with just one goal in the Premier League so far from 11 appearances, while he managed to score twice as well as providing 12 assists during the 2021/22 campaign.

His form has led to speculation that he could be omitted from Gareth Southgate's England World Cup squad.

But with Reece James and Kyle Walker-Peters out injured on the sidelines, Southgate would be foolish to leave out the Reds academy graduate.

In an exclusive interview with talkSPORT's Alex Crook, Gomez, who is also hoping to feature for the Three Lions in Qatar, was asked whether Alexander-Arnold is coping with criticism well.

To which he said: "Yeah. Trent is probably one of the most level-headed people around.

"He's a real consistent character, obviously I can't step in his shoes and feel what he feels or have his perspective.

"But it's obviously a by-product of how good Trent is as a player and all he's achieved being so young.

"Obviously sometimes it doesn't seem fair, but it's part and parcel I guess.

"But Trent definitely applies himself every day and controls what he can control and it's a given he's going to try and perform the best he can for the team.

"And that's what he does, he tries to do it every week. As players you can't control what's said about you and he's obviously going to try and do the best he can.

"But as a person and off the pitch he's definitely himself and always keeps the same application every day and has definitely not dipped his head or is worried about anything I don't think."

Pressed on whether it's a tight-knit supportive squad at Anfield that rallies behind each other, Gomez remarked: "Yeah, I'd definitely say so.

"Since the gaffer [Jurgen Klopp] has come in, there's been signings and top class players added, but we've been together for a while and know each other well.

"The skipper [Jordan Henderson] has been the skipper since the gaffer came and people like Milly [James Milner], Virg [Virgil van Dijk] and so on.

"Senior players have been here for a long time, so there is honest and frank conversations that can be had on the bus after games or in the dressing room.

"Just say it how it is and support each other when things aren't going the best and fundamentally it's been a rough season in comparison to previous ones so far and we accept that as a team.

"All we want to do is try and work to get it right."
