Petersen's 33 career goals as a substitute is a Bundesliga record, and he came off the bench again last week as Freiburg won a seven-goal thriller at Hoffenheim to guarantee they will compete in Europe next season. Now the question is which competition the new Europa-Park Stadion will play host to. The Black Forest club are currently fourth - in the final Champions League berth - but only one point above RB Leipzig in a tight European race where positions are being swapped every matchday. Nico Schlotterbeck's summer transfer to Borussia Dortmund was confirmed earlier in the week, with hometown boy Matthias Ginter now set to return from Borussia Mönchengladbach. Schlotterbeck has promised full focus on Freiburg with two crucial league games to go - plus the club's first ever DFB Cup final against Leipzig after the Bundesliga campaign is done and dusted.
Europe is also on the agenda at Union. They currently occupy seventh place, which is set to yield continental qualification thanks to Freiburg's cup final appearance with Leipzig. The Berliners simply need to equal (or better) Hoffenheim's result at home to Bayer Leverkusen at the same time to ensure they cannot fall out of the top seven. Then it's simply a matter of the competition again. Die Eisernen are the Bundesliga's form team over the last five games but were held to a draw by bottom side Greuther Fürth last time out. Sven Michel came on to spare their blushes, the week after he did the same to earn victory at Leipzig. However, Taiwo Awoniyi and Sheraldo Becker look to be the preferred front two. Frederik Ronnow has also taken over as first-choice goalkeeper ahead of Andreas Luthe.
Match stats
Four of Petersen's five goals this season have been from the bench. Freiburg have scored a total of 10 through substitutes, one short of their record from 2016/17.
Freiburg brothers Nico and Keven Schlotterbeck spent seasons on loan at Union, being the Berliners' best tacklers in 2020/21 and 2019/20 respectively.
Freiburg have a league-leading 24 goals from set pieces. Their 16 headed goals is also the most in the division.
Union have their own super-sub in Michel, who's struck off the bench in three of the last four games.
The Berliners haven't lost when 13-goal top scorer Awoniyi has struck this term, but only four have come on the road and none of his last six.
Die Eisernen are the only unbeaten team over the last five matchdays (W4, D1).
