Former Man Utd star Tevez gets first win as manager against 10-man opposition

Carlos Tevez took over as manager of Argentinian side Rosario Central after retiring from playing earlier in 2022, but had a slow start to his new life in the dugout Tevez took over at Rosario Central in June

Former Manchester United and Manchester City forward Carlos Tevez picked up his first win as a manager as his Rosario Central side defeated Sarmiento.

The 38-year-old hung up his boots earlier in 2022 after a trophy-laden career which saw him play in three continents. He took over in Rosario not long after, with the club confirming his appointment on June 21.

Tevez's managerial career got off to a tough start, with his team suffering narrow defeats against Gimanasia La Plata and Aldosivi in his first two games in charge. However, he will hope his team can build on their 1-0 win at home to opponents who finished the game with 10 men in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Facundo Buonanotte was Rosario Central's match-winner, scoring the only goal of the game at the Gigante de Arroyito. The teenager came close to scoring a second, with the woodwork denying him, but one goal was enough.

Buonanotte was born in December 2004, by which time Tevez was well into his playing career. Indeed, the former striker had already won Olympic gold with Argentina in 2004 and ended the first of his several Boca Junior stints at the start of the following calendar year.

Sarmiento had been unbeaten in three games before making the trip to Rosario. However, they were unable to find a way back into the game. They were not helped by the first-half dismissal of Franco Quinteros, with Tevez's team taking advantage of their extra man to claim the points.

"When I met him, I saw that he has the flame of a winner," Rosario Central vice-president Ricardo Carloni said of Tevez. "We talked about the club's projects and he seemed very good to us."

Tevez, meanwhile, detailed his ambitions in a recent interview with Ole. "I am going to be a coach. I have taken that decision," he said. "I have the same butterflies in my stomach as I had when I played. My teams are going to play the way I feel football."

In a playing career spanning two decades, Tevez won league titles in several different countries. He was a champion in Argentina and Brazil before moving to England, where he won the Premier League with Manchester United and Manchester City, adding a Champions League title with the former.

He also won back-to-back titles with Juventus before returning to Argentina to add further trophies with boyhood club Boca Juniors. He announced his retirement from playing after his adopted father and "number one fan" Segundo Raimundo died from Covid.
