The 26-year-old signed for the Premier League giants in 2020 from Ajax but has made just 62 appearances since then in what's been a disastrous spell at Old Trafford so far.
Much of his minutes for United have come off the bench, with starts being limited in his 62 appearances across all competitions.
Van de Beek missed the second half of last season as a result of a knee injury he suffered in January.
United were also in talks to sell him this summer but he has remained at Old Trafford, playing just 21 minutes this season.
His latest appearance appears to have come in a friendly match as the Manchester Evening News report he featured in a 3-0 win over the Tykes on Tuesday.

The Dutchman is said to have scored against the League One side at Carrington, with his last competitive goal coming in November 2021.
Antony is also reported to have featured in the win, as did 18-year-old midfielder Kobbie Mainoo as he makes his way back from injury.
Van de Beek has made just two appearances under Erik ten Hag this season as his career at Old Trafford continues to stagnate.
He came off the bench in their 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace and was also a substitute in their Carabao Cup win over the Eagles, which Man United won 3-0.
