Footage shows fighting between Man United and Rangers fans inside Old Trafford

talksport.com, 24 January 2025, 11:24
Major questions have been raised after a number of Rangers fans obtained tickets in the home end at Old Trafford on Thursday night.

Fan footage shows clashes between Manchester United and Gers fans during the thrilling Europa League clash, which ended 2-1 to the Red Devils.

Greater Manchester Police say there were 39 arrests in total for a variety of offences, which included 26 from the disorder on Great Ancoats Street before the game.

Shocking videos have been shared across social media from the Europa League tie, with numerous altercations within the home side of the stadium.

In one video caught on camera, fans can be seen shoving a man in a black jacket, who attempts to defend himself before being pursued down some stairs.

Another clip shows groups of Rangers fans huddled within the home end, a sight that stirred mixed emotions.

Some fans at the game joined talkSPORT Breakfast this morning to share their experiences.

Gareth, the Rangers fan, got a ticket in the home end and said: "Me and my pal took our two wee boys down to the game last night. I'm going to be totally honest, we bought our tickets off a third party site.

"We were a bit sceptical going in and we got sent the tickets a few hours before kick-off and it turned out our tickets were literally in the first row after the segregation.

"But when we were going into the stadium there was actually official Rangers staff at the gate and the turnstile.

"They turned up with about 40 or 50 Rangers fans including an ex-Rangers player and they were with the stewards letting the Rangers fans in. It was almost like an official club trip.

"The whole concourse was singing Rangers songs to that out to the stand and our section was it was it turned into the away ending because it was just completely full of Rangers fans."

One United supporter at the game raised major questions about how so many visiting fans could get in the ground.

Darren, the Man United fan, said: "I was in the Stretford End last night. There were not pockets of ones and twos of Rangers fans. Now ones and twos probably could have obtained tickets from United fans.

"They brought out a new ticketing system this time round where it's a live barcode that comes live three hours before the game.

"Now at one time you could screenshot and WhatsApp them. You can't do that this season. I'm not saying it's not doable to get your hands on a ticket but I'll give you an example. Like I said I was in the Stretford End.

"Now my mates who were in the East Stand, overlooking the Rangers fans at the top, there were loads of Rangers fans behind them and now my mate reckons there were between 1800 plus right behind him.

"You're not telling me all the United fans who normally sit in that area have all got together thinking I'll tell you what let's sell our tickets to Rangers fans.

"I'm sorry it stinks to me. They had the same issue when they played Galatasaray. They were all over the ground.

"Ones and twos can accept it, but when you're getting gangs of like 20 to 80 plus and all that all sat together I'm not having it.

"And on the concourse when it kicked off some of the police didn't want to know."

Manchester United stated last night that 'strict measures' had been implemented to prevent away supporters from acquiring tickets among their ranks and promised to impose serious penalties on anyone found guilty of unlawfully selling their tickets.

The statement read: "In anticipation of the risks around tonight's game, we took the strictest possible measures to prevent sales to away fans in home areas

"Tickets were only allocated to people who existed on our database prior to the draw taking place in August. Hospitality tickets had the same restrictions applied.

"Tickets forwarded by season ticket-holders and members also had the same restrictions applied (i.e. they could only be forwarded to fans on our database prior to the draw).

"Whilst the unauthorised touting of tickets has become more difficult since our introduction of in-app digital ticketing, it cannot be completely eliminated.

"All examples of away fans in home areas will be investigated over the coming days, with the strongest possible sanctions taken against the registered holders."
