Everton vs Peterborough meeting called as bad weather threatens cup clash

talksport.com, 9 January 2025, 11:45
Everton's FA Cup third round game against Peterborough tonight is at risk of being postponed over weather conditions.

The Premier League club are set to host the League One side at 7.45pm on Thursday, but a meeting is to take place this afternoon regarding the snow-effected area.

Both clubs released a statement saying that planned discussions will take place at 1pm, with Peterborough offering more information to supporters travelling to Liverpool.

No further snow is forecast for this evening, but temperatures will barely be above freezing around kick-off time at Goodison Park.

Everton say they are making 'every effort' to ensure the game goes ahead despite the icy conditions in Liverpool.

The press release from the two clubs read: "A safety meeting involving the Club and relevant authorities will be held at 1pm to assess the weather and travel conditions for tonight's FA Cup fixture between Everton and Peterborough United.

"At this stage the match is planned to go ahead as normal and every effort is being made to ensure that remains the case. We will continue to keep fans updated, and will provide more information following the meeting.

"Any supporters using the official coaches are advised to arrive as planned for a 1pm departure, all supporter coaches will depart as soon as we receive confirmation that the game will go ahead."

Everton's next door neighbours Liverpool underwent a similar procedure four days ago, and their snow covered clash with Manchester United went ahead after a safety meeting.

The match is highly-anticipated among fans as it could see Everton full-back Ashley Young come up against his son Tyler Young - who plays for Peterborough.

Speaking to talkSPORT, the older Young said sharing the pitch with his son would be the proudest moment of his career.

He explained: "I saw that we'd been drawn against Peterborough and like I said for years, if there was any way that we could play against each other or play with each other, it would be the pinnacle of my career. It would eclipse everything I've done.

"So when it finally was drawn I was sat next to my wife and I was like I've been drawn against Tyler and she was like, 'Nah no way,' and I said, 'Seriously look,' and so we was there watching it.

"So she rang him, tried to FaceTime him. Tyler being Tyler, any 18-year-old, 'Did you see the draw?' 'No I just come out the shower. What draw?'

"Obviously he didn't even know the FA Cup draw was on. You know as soon as I saw it, I'm not one that usually is lost for words and for me I just had no words.

"I was saying to my wife, saying to my daughters that I just couldn't believe it, like I just couldn't believe it.

"Tyler was getting ready for a game the next day, he couldn't believe it after he'd obviously seen that I'd said that we'd been drawn against each other."

Tyler on his part told talkSPORT: "It means a lot, even to be playing against my dad, but even to play in the FA Cup, which has got so much history.

"Just playing in the competition I've been watching since I was younger would mean a lot, it'll be even better that I'll be playing against my dad.

"Anything can happen in the FA Cup, so if we do come out with a good win, it'll mean even more because I would have just beaten my dad - and we've just won in the FA Cup."

Peterborough made it to the third round by winning two high-scoring affairs, needing to score four goals against Newport and Notts County.

They're currently on a five-game winless run and heading towards the League One relegation zone, and the story isn't much better for Everton.

The Premier League outfit are similarly winless in five, and there are big doubts over manager Sean Dyche, particularly with new ownership coming in.
