Erling Haaland makes Man City vow as new shirt number finally confirmed

mirror.co.uk, 9 July 2022, 17:00
Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has spoken of the importance of his shirt number after he was able to get what he wanted following Gabriel Jesus' transfer to Arsenal

Erling Haaland has vowed to continue his crazy goal-scoring spree after being officially confirmed as Manchester City's new number 9.

Haaland, who turns 22 later this month, will wear the same shirt number he wore at Borussia Dortmund after Gabriel Jesus left the shirt vacant following his £45million move to Arsenal at the start of the week.

And Haaland, who cost what could prove to be a bargain £51million transfer fee as City met his buy-out clause at Dortmund, has promised to continue banging in the goals after scoring 86 goals in 89 games in two-and-a-half seasons in the Bundesliga.

Haaland, who has also scored 20 goals in 21 games for Norway, said: "I'm delighted to have been presented with the number 9. It's been part of my story over the last two years, both at club level and with the national team and I'm looking forward to continuing that at City. It's a shirt that every striker aspires to and to wear it at one of the best clubs in the world is a dream come true. I can't wait to get started."

Haaland flew into Manchester yesterday after a break in Marbella and will have his fitness assessed by City's conditioning team before joining the rest of Pep Guardiola's squad as they prepare for the club's tour to the USA later this month. City will play Mexican side Club America in Houston on July 20 before facing Bayern Munich in Green Bay Wisconsin three days later. Haaland will be unveiled with the rest of City's summer signings - Argentine striker Julian Alvarez, Leeds and England midfielder Kalvin Phillips and German keeper Stefan Ortega - in a glitzy ceremony at the Etihad.

Haaland added: "I hope the fans are looking forward to it as much as we are. It'll be great to come together with the other lads for the first time at the stadium and get the chance to be introduced to our supporters." Meanwhile, Alvarez has also spoken of his excitement at joining City. The 22-year-old, who joined from River Plate in a deal worth £14.1m, is hopeful he can settle in quickly to life in the Premier League.

"I'm very happy to be part of this club," he said on City's website. "As a boy I always dreamed of playing in Europe, playing in the best clubs, in the major leagues and so to be here today is a privilege. Obviously this is a big change, but I think it has similarities with what happened to me until now: from one of the biggest clubs in South America to one of the biggest clubs in Europe. Although it has its differences, there are many things that are similar."
