Eriksen open to rejoining Ajax in January with Dane unable to play for Inter Milan

talksport.com, 3 November 2021, 15:55
Christian Eriksen is considering a return to former club Ajax to continue playing professional football, after being told he cannot play for current side Inter Milan.

That's according to reports in Italy, despite calls from Fabrice Muamba for the Denmark international to retire after his cardiac arrest at Euro 2020.

The former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder suffered a cardiac arrest in Denmark's opening group game against Finland at Euro 2020 in June, with the star given CPR and shocked with a defibrillator on the pitch before he was rushed into hospital.

Eriksen was later fitted with an ICD [Implantable cardioverter defibrillator] to monitor his heart rhythm, and he's been out of action ever since.

He is currently at Inter Milan and unable to play for the club due to Serie A regulations stating that players cannot take to the field with a defibrillator fitted.

But, according to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport, Eriksen is 'tempted' to return to former club Ajax, where he could return to action… and would not be alone with his condition.

Netherlands international, and former Manchester United defender, Daley Blind was fitted with an ICD in December 2019 after being diagnosed with an inflammation of his heart muscle, and is still playing football with Ajax.

Eriksen, 29, played 60 times for Inter after joining from Spurs in January 2020, helping the club deliver their first Serie A title in 11 years last season.

A recent Inter statement on Eriksen's situation read: "With reference to the registration rights of the player Eriksen it should be noted that following a serious injury which occurred during the European Championship in June 2021, the player has been temporarily inhibited by the Italian medical authority from sporting activity in the current season.

"Although the current conditions of the player don't meet the requirements of achieving sporting fitness in Italy, the same could instead be achieved in other countries where the player could resume competitive activity."

However, Eriksen has been advised by Fabrice Muamba to retire from the game after his health scare.

Muamba suffered a heart attack in March 2012 during Bolton's FA Cup tie against Tottenham Hotspur, where his heart stopped for 78 minutes.

He retired from football later in the year and, speaking in an exclusive interview with talkSPORT, the Englishman urged Eriksen to make the same decision.

"You've got to look at the bigger picture," Muamba told White and Jordan.

"Once you suffer something like this it's not about you any more, it's about the people around you.

"To be involved in a very intense sport like football is another difficult situation because you're up and down and it's not good for the heart.

"Me personally, I would advise him: You've played the game at the highest level, you won trophies, shake everyone's hand and do something else with your life.

"Every time you go back on the pitch you're putting a lot of people in danger, it's not about you now.

"I did what I had to do. People ask me if I'm upset but I'm not in the sense that I came from Congo in Africa to England and I never knew I'd become a footballer. For me to play the game in England, I've lived the dream.

"This game was taken away from me, not because I was a bad player but because of an accident that I had no control of, but I still got to live the dream. I still get to enjoy life and do what I need to do.

"It's not the end of the world. There are more things to do in life."
