England star Harry Kane could soon have a goal record that will never be broken

talksport.com, 18 November 2024, 09:30
Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane shows no signs of slowing down with his England goalscoring record seemingly set to stand for decades.

The Three Lions skipper was once again on target in Sunday's 5-0 win over Ireland at Wembley in Lee Carsley final match in charge before Thomas Tuchel takes over.

Kane opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 53rd minute to bring up a record-extending 69th international goal on his 103rd appearance.

Question marks have been raised over the 31-year-old's importance in the England side with Ollie Watkins preferred instead in last week's 3-0 Nations League victory at Greece.

But Kane continues to prove he remains as deadly as ever in front of goal as he keeps writing his place in the England record books.

With 69 England goals, he is 16 strikes ahead of his nearest rival in Wayne Rooney.

No current active England star is in the top ten on the all-time scoring charts, with Frank Lampard and Vivian Woodward joint-tenth with 29 goals.

From the most recent England squad, Jude Bellingham is second in the scoring charts behind Kane.

Though he has some way to catching Kane up having only found the back of the net on six occasions.

Watkins is then third with five goals, though at the age of 28, it is highly unlikely he will come anywhere near Kane's tally.

As for previous call-ups, Marcus Rashford sits on 17 goals, with Bukayo Saka on 12 strikes.

And it's not just Kane's all-time scoring record that may never be broken, with the striker having also unsurprisingly banged in the most in competitive games with 61.

He is also the quickest England star to reach 100 caps, with it taking him nine years and 167 days having made his debut in March 2015, while he also boasts the most appearances in competitive matches with 87.

He has also featured in 18 matches spread across three European Championships - an England record - with his 28 outings including World Cup fixtures another all-time high for the Three Lions.

Another record that may never be broken is his most appearances in a single year accolade, with Kane top of the pile alongside Jack Charlton having played 16 times for England in 2021.

Kane is also the joint record holder for scoring in the most consecutive internationals [six], most goals at a single World Cup [six], and most goals at a World Cup match [three].

And he is the outright record holder for most goals in a calendar year [16] and the most scored from penalties [23].

It's safe to say that with the current crop of England players nowhere near Kane's haul of goals, a number of his records could be his own for many more years.

England icon Stuart Pearce appeared on the talkSPORT Breakfast show on Monday morning where he discussed Kane's role in the team.

And the ex-left-back has declared no-one in the team comes close to his level in being able to get in front of him.

Asked when is it time to make changes regarding who is leading the line, Pearce said: "Normally that comes when someone puts enough pressure on Harry Kane to put him out of the team.

"At the moment, there's no one here to do that. [Dominic] Solanke and Watkins are in the squad, but I don't see either of them being good enough to put Kane out of the team.

"They offer different things and a little bit more energy, but you have to consider the all-round game Harry has.

"The statement around the players missing was a strong captain's statement.

"When you watch the goals yesterday, the build-up to [Jarrod] Bowen's goal, Kane went up to the takers and said what to do and he marshalled people in the box.

"All of those things are missed by some people. He made sure everything that was worked on in training was put into practice."

It's not just on the international scene where Kane has impressed, with the forward chipping in with 17 goals and nine assists for Bayern from just 16 matches this season.

After smashing the Bundsliga record for most goals scored by a player in their first season, the Tottenham legend has also scored five hat-tricks in the quickest time.

While no other player in German top-flight history has reached 50 goal involvements quicker than Kane, who did so in just 35 matches.

And Kane could cap off what has been another stunning start to the season by finally scooping silverware come May, with Bayern five points clear at the top of the table.
