England announce 23-man squad but Alexander-Arnold and Greenwood miss out

Gareth Southgate has unveiled his 23-man England squad for October's World Cup qualifiers, with no room for Trent Alexander-Arnold or Mason Greenwood.

The Three Lions sit top of qualifying Group I and can edge closer to booking their spot at next year's tournament in Qatar as they travel to Andorra and host Hungary.

Right-back Alexander-Arnold - who started in midfield against Andorra in early September - is expected to miss Liverpool's Premier League clash with Manchester City on Sunday due to an groin injury and will spend the international break recovering.

Greenwood, 19, has been left out of the England squad on the request of Manchester United chiefs, who are keen to manage the teenage forward's workload.

Borussia Dortmund made a similar request regarding 18-year-old midfielder Jude Bellingham, although Southgate is keen to bring the duo back to the fold for November's fixtures against Albania and San Marino.

Elsewhere, AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori was rewarded with a recall, while fellow centre-back Harry Maguire is out of the squad due to a calf injury.

There were also recalls for Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins and fit-again Manchester City ace Phil Foden.

Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale - a member of the squad which reached the final of Euro 2020 as a replacement for then-injured Dean Henderson - gets the nod ahead of Burnley's Nick Pope.

Ramsdale is joined by Gunners teammate Bukayo Saka, but £50million summer signing Ben White is not included despite travelling to the Euros.

Reece James is handed a spot in the squad despite missing Chelsea's Champions League clash with Juventus on Wednesday through injury. He will compete for minutes at right-back with Atletico Madrid's Kieran Trippier and Manchester City's Kyle Walker.

Options at left-back are few and far between, with United's Luke Shaw the only natural option in that position.

The 26-year-old limped off in the first half of the 1-0 defeat by Aston Villa last Saturday but his injury is not believed to be serious.

In midfield, Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips will hope to rekindle their partnership while Jordan Henderson provides competition. Mason Mount, Jesse Lingard and Foden will vie for minutes in the more advanced roles.

Captain Harry Kane is supported in attack by Jack Grealish, Saka, Raheem Sterling, Jadon Sancho and Watkins.
