Dan Ashworth set for new job in different sport after Man United sacking

The 53-year-old departed his sporting director role in December just 159 days after officially moving to Old Trafford.

Ashworth arrived from Newcastle after two-and-a-half successful years to oversee United's transfer business, their football performance as well as their daily operations.

But it is understood that the club's co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe had grown frustrated with his indecision.

Incredibly, in figures revealed by the Red Devils last week, the cost of Ashworth's hiring - and subsequent pay-off - was £4.1million.

Ashworth played a vital role in handing Erik ten Hag a new contract in the summer, only for the Dutchman to then be axed in October - costing the club £10.4m in paying him and his staff off.

While he also had a major say in United's £183m spending spree in Ineos' first transfer window.

United signed the likes of Leny Yoro, Manuel Ugarte, Matthijs De Ligt, Joshua Zirkzee, and Noussair Mazraoui - with many failing to hit the grade so far.

Just days after leaving Old Trafford, talkSPORT reported how Ashworth was being considered to become Everton's sporting director.

But a move to Goodison Park failed to materialise, with The Times now claiming that the ex-FA director is set for an advisory role at Warwickshire.

It has been said that Ashworth already boasts a relationship with the cricket club having joined their audit committee in 2021.

In what was an honorary role, being on the committee involved oversight over their high-performance structure and elite teams.

While Warwickshire are on the lookout to appoint a new performance director, Ashworth is not in contention.

That is despite holding similar roles at West Brom and Brighton prior to his posts at Newcastle and United.

The salary on offer is believed to be significantly lower than at his previous jobs.

Instead, Ashworth will draw on his experience in football to work on matters at Warwickshire such as high-performance.

And they will be hoping Ashworth's expertise will help them improve on their seventh-placed finish in the County Championship in 2025.

The eight-time winners haven't scooped the trophy since 2021.
