Crystal Palace vs Arsenal LIVE: Gunners look to continue winning run in derby

talksport.com, 18 August 2023, 09:48
Arsenal will look to continue their fine start to the season when they face London rivals Crystal Palace live on talkSPORT this Monday.

The Community Shield winners kicked off the new Premier League campaign with a 2-1 victory over Nottingham Forest.

First-half strikes from Eddie Nketiah and Bukayo Saka looked to have put Arsenal on course for a comfortable win before a late Taiwo Awoniyi goal ensured a nervy finish.

Mikel Arteta's men now return to Selhurst Park, where the club started the memorable 2022-23 season with a 2-0 triumph.

But Palace promise to provide a sterner test this year having registered 24 shots during their 1-0 win over Sheffield United.

Arsenal will be without Jurrien Timber for the foreseeable future after he suffered an injury to his ACL against Forest.

Oleksandr Zinchenko remains a doubt from his own calf injury meaning that Kieran Tierney could be afforded a rare opportunity.

Gabriel Jesus is still several weeks away from recovering from a knee issue, while Mohamed Elneny is the club's long-term absentee.

Folarin Balogun and Albert Sambi Lokonga are also both struggling with knocks as they continue to be linked with moves away.

Crystal Palace vs Arsenal: What has been said?

Arteta has admitted he could bring in further recruits after Timber's potentially season-ending injury.

He said in his press conference on Thursday morning: "We did not plan for this injury so we have to assess now what the options, the best way to get the best out of the players that we have.

"Because, as I said, my biggest challenge now is to get the best out of the players that we have.

"I cannot control anything that is not here and we are open and we have to be open to reacting if something happens.

Crystal Palace vs Arsenal: Match stats

Both Eddie Nketiah and Bukayo Saka scored in Arsenal's 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest on MD1. The last time an English player scored in both of the Gunners' first two Premier League games was 1997-98 (Ian Wright against Leeds and Coventry).

Odsonne Édouard scored the winner in Crystal Palace's 1-0 victory over Sheffield United on MD1 - the only player to score in Palace's first two games of a Premier League season is Wilfried Zaha in 2020-21.

Bukayo Saka has featured in each of Arsenal's last 81 Premier League games. If he plays in this match, he will equal Paul Merson's club record of playing in 82 in a row in the competition, set between February 1995 and February 1997.

Crystal Palace had 24 shots on MD1 against Sheffield United, the most in an away Premier League game that Opta has on record (since 2003-04) for the Eagles. Since Roy Hodgson returned in April, they are averaging 15.7 shots per game in the Premier League, just over five more shots per game than they were having under Patrick Vieira in the competition (10.5).

Arsenal have lost all four of their away Premier League games played on Monday nights under Mikel Arteta, last winning an away Monday evening game in December 2019 at West Ham under caretaker manager Fredrik Ljungberg.

Crystal Palace are yet to lose at home in the Premier League since Roy Hodgson's return to the club, winning three and drawing two under the 76-year-old. However, they've only won their opening home Premier League game of the season once in 14 previous attempts (D3 L10), beating Southampton 1-0 in 2020-21, and lost 2-0 to Arsenal in their opening home game last season.

Arsenal won 10 of their 12 Premier League London derbies last season - a record number of London derby league wins by a team in a season in Football League history - drawing the other two. The Gunners last had a longer run unbeaten run in such games between November 2001 and April 2005 (35 in a row).

Crystal Palace won their first Premier League match this season, beating Sheffield United at Bramall Lane. In only one previous top-flight season have the Eagles started with two wins in their first two matches, doing so in 2020-21 in Roy Hogdson's first spell in charge.

Arsenal won both Premier League meetings with Crystal Palace last season, having won just one of their previous eight against the Eagles beforehand (D5 L2).

Crystal Palace have won just one of their last eight Premier League meetings with Arsenal (D4 L3), a 3-0 home win in April 2022.
