Club Brugge player causes furious on-pitch mass brawl with controversial gesture

talksport.com, 9 March 2025, 21:59
Club Brugge's Ardon Jashari caused a huge on-field brawl after the Brugge derby when trying to plant a flag in the middle of the pitch.

The Champions League side beat their bitter rivals Cercle Brugge 3-1 on Sunday afternoon away from home.

At the end of the game, the midfielder headed over to the away end to collect a flag in Club Brugge's blue and black colours.

He then ran towards the centre circle while his teammate Brandon Mechele stopped one Cercle player from confronting Jashari.

The 22-year-old made it to the centre circle and managed to plant the flag before a number of Cercle players surrounded him.

The home side's goalkeeper, Maxime Delanghe, was having none of it and kicked the flag out of Jashari's hands.

Delanghe could then be seen carrying the flag away while the other Cercle players surrounded Jashari and started pushing him.

This dragged his teammates in, and it all descended into chaos with every player from both sets of teams involved.

Jashari was the target of Cercle Brugge's anger, while the fans in the home end weren't too happy either as they loudly booed throughout.

By the end, the young midfielder was being pushed away as his fellow Club Brugge players tried to keep the peace.

It was a moment that resembled Graeme Souness' iconic actions after a Galatasaray vs Fenerbahce game in 1996.

While managing Galatasaray, Souness helped them beat their great rivals 3-0 in the Turkish Cup, and he planted a flag in the middle of the pitch that nearly caused a riot.

Clearly, Jashari has seen these images because that is exactly what he attempted to do as well.

In the end, nothing got too out of hand, but you can guarantee that the Club Brugge fans would have loved it, while he will be enemy no.1 to anyone associated with Cercle.

As for the game itself, Club Brugge arrived into it off the back of a 3-1 home defeat to Aston Villa in the Champions League.

The Belgian side had impressed many during the Champions League league phase and in their play-off victory against Atalanta.

Brugge beat the Europa League champions 5-2 on aggregate and turned in a stunning performance in the second leg in Bergamo to get through.

They'd also already beaten Villa at home in the league phase.

And ahead of the second leg, the last thing they needed was a derby, but it proved to be a brilliant afternoon for Brugge.

The visitors were 3-0 up at half time, thanks to captain Hans Vanaken and a double from Ferran Jutgla.

Switzerland international Jashari also set up Vanaken's first goal to open the scoring.

Ibrahim Diakite got one back just before the hour mark, but Brugge held on for a huge three points, leaving them in second place.

Jashari then sparked the brawl, but despite having to deal with some angry Cercle players, it's unlikely he'll care too much.
