Classy Arsenal star Miedema inspires Netherlands comeback against Sweden

talksport.com, 9 July 2022, 20:58
Vivianne Miedema showed her class by helping the Netherlands to earn a 1-1 draw against an impressive Sweden side.

It was the Swedes who looked the most likely to win the clash at Bramall Lane in front of more than 21,000 fans, however a moment of quality from the Arsenal talisman was enough to help Mark Parsons' side to a hard-earned point as she teed up Jill Roord to level the game after Jonna Andersson's opener.

It was a slow start for the reigning European champions as Sweden pressed high and caused them plenty of issues at the back.

It wasn't long until a collision with a defender saw Netherlands' stopper Sari van Veenendaal brought off with what looked like a rib injury, to be replaced by Daphne van Domselaar.

Fresh from coming on the pitch, the 22-year-old van Domselaar was tested by Sweden as they peppered her goal with several efforts, one of which came from Fridolina Rolfo who tried her luck from just inside the opposition half.

However it didn't take long for the young stopper to be picking the ball out of her net as Sweden took the lead through Andersson, following some wonderful wing play from Kosovare Asllani.

Things went from bad to worse shortly before the break when Dutch full-back Aniek Nouwen also hobbled off injured, giving Netherlands coach Mark Parsons plenty to think about at the break.

Thankfully, the Netherlands' talisman, Miedema, didn't take long to put a quiet first half behind her to inspire a move that led to Roord sweeping home from inside the area to make it 1-1.

In truth, neither side were at their fluent best at Bramall Lane, but Miedema, who is the all-time WSL top scorer, was able to take the game by the scruff off the neck and gave the Netherlands a fighting chance of getting a crucial three points in Group C.

Both sides had opportunities during the second period, but a goal apiece was probably a fair result as two of the competition's canceled each other out in an entertaining affair.

However that wasn't the only match taking place on a jam-packed Saturday night.

Elsewhere in Group C, Portugal were held to a 2-2 draw by Switzerland at Leigh Sports Village.

It was a disastrous start for the Portuguese as a Coumba Sow stunner was followed by a header from Rahel Kiwic to give the Swiss a stunning 2-0 lead inside just four minutes.

Despite being shell-shocked, Portugal fought back as Diana Gomes poked home on the hour-mark, before Jessica Silva leveled the game with a fine finish.

While both sides ended the game with a point apiece, they'll both be hoping for an improved result in their next, more tricky encounters.
