Chelsea vs Brighton LIVE: Blues desperate to end miserable form in Carabao Cup

talksport.com, 25 September 2023, 14:51
Chelsea are in desperate need of a win in their Carabao Cup tie against Brighton after making a miserable start to the season.

The Blues are 14th in the Premier League table and four points above the relegation zone, only winning one of their opening six games.

Mauricio Pochettino's side have also not scored in three straight matches, with a 1-0 home defeat to Aston Villa on Sunday continuing their awful form.

One of their only wins of the campaign came against League Two side Wimbledon last time out in the Carabao Cup.

And even that performance was unconvincing but it booked a clash with Brighton who are in completely the opposite mood to Chelsea.

Roberto De Zerbi has led his side up to third in the top-flight and now they enter domestic cup competition for the first time this season.

Chelsea vs Brighton: Team news

Cole Palmer is expected to make his full Chelsea debut this week after coming off the bench in every game since joining the club.

Former Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo is likely to line up against his former club while Robert Sanchez could miss out in place of Djordje Petrovic in goal.

Up front, Armando Broja made his long-awaited return from injury last time out but it could be too soon to risk a start.

Wesley Fofana, Reece James, Carney Chukwuemeka, Christopher Nkunku, Romeo Lavia and Noni Madueke are among the many Blues stars out injured.

As for the visitors, Kaoru Mitoma came off the bench to score a brace last time out and could be rewarded with a start.

Barcelona loanee Ansu Fati may also start with Joao Pedro leading the line after he was rested in place of Danny Welbeck at the weekend.

Chelsea vs Brighton: What has been said?

Pochettino is trying to remain positive despite Chelsea's awful start to the season.

After defeat to Aston Villa, he said: "It's about learning, it's all the process.

"We are a young team in a process that they need to learn all together.

"It's difficult to talk about positives when you lose, but we need to talk about positive things, we need to keep the positive things.

"No doubt in time I think the team is going to perform, but of course now we cannot hide the situation.

Chelsea vs Brighton: Match facts

Brighton are unbeaten in their last seven League Cup away games (W5 D2), though their two draws in that run have resulted in penalty shootout defeats (v Leicester in 2021-22 and Charlton last season).

Chelsea lost 2-0 to Man City in the League Cup third round last season, but haven't gone out at this stage of the competition in consecutive campaigns since 1999-00/2000-01.

Brighton have won their last two meetings with Chelsea in all competitions (both in the Premier League last season), having won just one of their first 18 against the Blues (D5 L12).

This is the first ever League Cup meeting between Chelsea and Brighton, and first in any cup competition since a 2-0 win for the Blues in the 1972-73 FA Cup.
