Chelsea fans turn on Potter as Ward-Prowse dumps further woe on Blues

The atmosphere at Stamford Bridge turned toxic as Chelsea fell to defeat against Southampton.

The managerless Saints deservedly went into the break 1-0 up thanks to a free-kick from none other than James Ward-Prowse, and managed to keep their second clean sheet of the season in what was another disappointing afternoon for the Blues.

Following a clumsy challenge on Stuart Armstrong from Cesar Azpilicueta six-yards outside the penalty area, the visitors won a free-kick just as the first half ticked into added time.

And with Southampton having Ward-Prowse at their disposal, it's no surprise his effort found the back of the net.

"What a hit! Chelsea nil, Southampton one and it's that man, the dead ball specialist James Ward-Prowse, 25-yards out, right-footed into the top right hand corner," talkSPORT's commentator for the game Alex Crook said.

"Kepa Arrizabalaga was grasping thin air, it was another stupendous strike from James Ward-Prowse the Southampton captain."

Meanwhile Ward-Prowse's free-kick puts his tally of Premier League free-kicks up to 17, just one off of former dead ball specialist David Beckham's all-time record.

But while the relegation favourites' fans were in raptures in the away end, those in the home sections at Stamford Bridge made their thoughts known at half-time.

"Loud boos as well here at Stamford Bridge," Crook said as the whistle blew.

"No more than Southampton deserve, they've been the better team," he continued. "Chelsea have created little."

Raheem Sterling had an effort cleared off the line in the second half and Mykhailo Mudryk's strike went just wide in during the lengthy period of added time from Cesar Azplicueta's injury, but the Blues ultimately failed to score.

And at full-time, fans could be heard calling for manager Graham Potter to be sacked during Adrian Durham's GameDay Live.

Chelsea now have just two wins in 14 in what's been a difficult start to life at the club for Potter, and the loss against bottom side Southampton will pile pressure on the board to stop the rot.

The Saints' win takes them three points off safety, whilst Chelsea remain tenth in the league, ten points off the top four.
