Carlos Tevez closing in on first managerial role after announcing retirement

Rosario Central are set to appoint ex-Argentina hitman Carlos Tevez as their new manager after the forward confirmed his retirement from professional football Carlos Tevez

Carlos Tevez is close to landing his first managerial job with Argentine side Rosario Central.

The former Manchester United and Manchester City striker only announced his retirement earlier this month. Tevez last played for Boca Juniors, where he struck 22 times in 66 league games but left his boyhood club in June 2021.

Prior to that, he'd enjoyed a hugely successful period in Europe, playing for some of the biggest clubs before a brief stint in China. Tevez had stopped playing after his adopted father, Segundo Raimundo, died from Covid-19 last February. Raimundo was the player's adopted father after his biological father died before he was born.

It had, naturally, left a mark on Tevez, who took a break from football but is now ready to return with Rosario. Reports in his homeland claim the 38-year-old is set to beat Pablo Sanchez to the role.

As per The Sun, both men met with Rosario chiefs for extensive interviews this week. However, it is understood Tevez has managed to pip the experienced Sanchez to the position.

Rosario currently play in the Argentine Primera Division and sit seventh in the table after three matches. They picked up their first win of the season with a 1-0 win over Godoy Cruz thanks to Gaspar Servio's strike.

Tevez is expected to sign a three-year deal and could make his debut in the dugout on June 24 when Rosario host Gimnasia in the league. "I'm going to be a coach," Tevez said in an interview recently. "I've taken that decision. I have the same butterflies in my stomach as I had when I played. My teams are going to play the way I feel football."

Despite having little to no experience in first-team management, Tevez has been picking the brains of Serie A winners Max Allegri and Stefano Pioli after he took in training sessions with both Juventus and AC Milan. Rosario goalkeeper Servio admitted he is excited to work with Tevez.

"For me it's something special that Carlitos [Tevez] can come here. If he does come here, the group will back him to the death. I hope he comes. He has a lot of experience as a player and we are all predisposed to learn and to help Central," he said. Throughout an illustrious career, Tevez scored 308 goals in 746 games during spells in five different countries. He started at boyhood club Boca Juniors, before going on to play for the likes of West Ham, United, City and Juventus.
