Bruno Fernandes admits second Solskjaer rule has been scrapped at Man Utd

Bruno Fernandes admitted a second change has been made at Manchester United since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's exit.

Ronaldo and Fernandes were both on target for the Red Devils on Thursday night as they ran out 3-2 winners over Arsenal.

United won the match thanks to a penalty, which Ronaldo dispatched.

Until now Fernandes has been Man United's primary penalty taker and even after he missed one against Aston Villa earlier in the season, Solskjaer backed him to keep taking them, rather than hand them to Ronaldo.

"That's football," said Solskjaer at the time. "He'll step forward every day of the week for the club and the team. Sometimes it just doesn't go your way.

"That is part and parcel of it. It is such a fine line between heaven and hell and unfortunately today he missed it. But you know Bruno has been excellent. He is such a good penalty taker and today you'd back him with your mortgage, I would guess.

"What I didn't enjoy and didn't like was the way they crowded the referee around the penalty spot and tried to affect Bruno. It clearly worked for them but that's not great to see but they achieved what they needed to."

Fernandes was asked why he let Ronaldo take the penalty after the win over Arsenal, and told BBC Sport: "We didn't have a chat.

"I missed the last one so I trust him in the same way I trust myself. It was time for Cristiano to take the penalty because I took the last one and missed it. It doesn't matter who gets on the penalty."

This is the second change at United since Solskjaer's sacking after Michael Carrick brought Phil Jones in from the cold.

Jones has been suffering from an injury this season, but has not featured for the Red Devils since January 2020 and was very much outcast during Solskjaer's time as boss.

So much so in fact that Jones was even left out of United's Champions League squad entirely this season.

Since Solskjaer was sacked and Carrick has taken temporary charge, Jones travelled with the Red Devils to Spain for the Champions League win over Villarreal.

He was still ineligible to play for United but was with the team nonetheless.

Jones was been included in Man United's matchday squad for the win over Arsenal suggesting there may be a way back for him under the new regime at Old Trafford.
