Birmingham fans are snapping up Deeney shirts and new boy can't wait for debut

Ordinarily that might be Wayne Rooney, but everyone is there to (hopefully) see Troy Deeney don the famous blue shirt.

The Watford legend confirmed his departure from the newly promoted Hornets at the end of August having spent 11 years at the Hertfordshire outfit, scoring 140 goals in 419 games.

It's common knowledge the Blues' new signing is a diehard fan of the club, growing up just six miles from St Andrew's and regularly posting pictures on his Instagram showing off his Birmingham City tattoo.

Deeney made his allegiance to known at his time at Watford, being always sure to provide the Aston Villa faithful with a daring celebration whenever he scored against them for the Hornets.

What better opportunity then for Deeney to show his love for his childhood team than to try to bring them success wearing the shirt?

Despite the fact that Vicarage Road saw the best of him, the 33-year-old striker is adamant this new chapter is by no means the beginning of the end of his career, reassuring fans his move was 'not a swansong'.

"It was never a case of Watford trying to get rid of me, I think it was just a case of me knowing my minutes would be restricted with the fantastic new players we've got there," he told talkSPORT.

The Birmingham-born man added he was in good shape, so his next move was going to be anything but a step towards retirement.

"If it was about just coming to play for a season I'd have gone to the MLS or somewhere hot and enjoy it, not currently sat in the rain in Coventry outside of McDonald's talking to you," he said laughing.

The transfer was apparently made very quickly between Blues manager Lee Bowyer and the striker, and not soon after Deeney announced he was leaving Watford, the news of him signing on a two year deal for Birmingham was out.

"The player deserves a lot of credit because he has taken a big wage cut to come here and people won't realise", Bowyer said at the time, highlighting how committed Deeney is to this new chapter.

The Blues currently sit eighth in the Championship after five games following an impressive start, including a 5-0 win against Luton Town.

Demand in the Blues' club shop has been high that on one day, they ended up running out of E's to put on them, resorting to 'Troy' instead.

The man himself is also raring to go, saying that on his first day at the training ground, he was 'like a school kid'.

"I was up at 6am, been waiting around bouncing, got my packed lunch and I'm ready to go".

Deeney even said getting Birmingham promoted would be 'the biggest achievement footballing wise,' despite him having already played regular top flight football and winning two promotions with Watford.

Birmingham are still facing issues regarding the opening of all of the stands at St Andrew's after asbestos was discovered at the ground, further delaying a large portion of season ticket holders being able to return to watch their team in the flesh.

But no matter the circumstances he makes his first appearance for the club in, Birmingham fans can be sure to expect the same audacious Deeney - just with an extra layer of passion now he can finally play for his boyhood club.
