Bayern miss out on world record after dismal 5-0 loss to Gladbach

mirror.co.uk, 28 October 2021, 09:06

A full-strength Bayern Munich XI suffered a 5-0 loss to Borussia Monchengladbach in the German Cup on Wednesday evening.

The result shocked European football and, remarkably, was the first time the Bavarian giants have failed to score in 85 games.

Bayern were just weeks away from beating River Plate's astonishing 96-game world record, set between 1936 and 1939.

Julian Nagelsmann's team did set another record, though, suffering the club's biggest ever defeat in the German Cup.

Bayern are the most successful side in the competition's history, winning it a record 20 times. Werder Bremen are the next most successful club with with six titles.

It's also the first time Bayern have lost a game by at least five goals since their 7-1 defeat to Fortuna Dusseldorf 43 years ago.

The club's record defeat remains their 7-0 home loss to former Bundesliga rivals Schalke in 1976. It's unlikely that will change anytime soon, despite their cup woes.

Speaking to reporters after the match, Bayern's sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic said: "I'm absolutely shocked. We simply didn't turn up.

"We were just not there. We did not win a single tackle or challenge in the entire first half.

"Everything that could go wrong went wrong. We let ourselves be outplayed in every situation - a collective blackout."

Bayern's XI against Gladbach included Manuel Neuer, Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka, Serge Gnabry, Thomas Muller, Leroy Sane and Robert Lewandowski.

The defeat is worrying news for Nagelsmann, who missed the game as he was self-isolating at home after contracting Covid-19.

Bayern have made a decent start to the season under their young manager, 34, winning seven of their nine Bundesliga games.

They've also won all three of their Champions League games so far. Their league and European form will ultimately decide Nagelsmann's fate.

Reacting to the defeat, Muller said: "We never got to the point where our Bayern engine kicked in. We can only apologise to the fans and apologise to Gladbach.

"With the exception of Neuer, it was a catastrophic performance from us. I haven't experienced anything like that before.

"It's difficult to wrap your head round. We have to put it behind us now, because we've got a game on Saturday."

Gladbach's sporting director Max Eberl, who made one Bundesliga appearance for Bayern during his playing days, was delighted with the result.

Who is the best manager in the world right now? Have your say!

The five-time German champs have endured a tough start to the season, picking up just 11 points from their first nine league games and losing 1-0 to Hertha Berlin on Saturday.

Gladbach seem to have the edge over Nagelsmann's side, though, beating them 2-0 in a pre-season friendly and holding them to a 1-1 Bundesliga draw in August.

Eberl said: "You dream of things like this every now and then. It's really a great night, a great performance from the team. We were irrepressible, defended from the front and scored goals early on."
