Augsburg vs. Wolfsburg: probable line-ups, match stats and LIVE blog!

bundesliga.com, 2 April 2022, 19:25
Ricardo Pepi and Max Kruse should provide the firepower when Augsburg host Wolfsburg on Sunday (kick-off: 3.30pm CEST).
Latest

Pepi is still yet to open his account for Augsburg and has been an unused substitute in each of their last two games as Michael Gregoritsch has led the line instead. Florian Niederlechner and Andi Zeqiri were both used ahead of Pepi in the late 3-2 defeat to VfB Stuttgart last time out, showing the young American has competition for places in attack - even with Alfred Finnbogason missing out through injury. But with Gregoritsch and Andre Hahn now sidelined, a chance may have opened up. With just two league wins to their name in 2022 so far, Augsburg are precariously placed going into Matchday 28. Only goal difference separates them from the promotion/relegation playoff place and defeat this weekend could see them drop into the bottom two.

Wolfsburg were beaten 2-0 by Bayer Leverkusen on Matchday 27 and the Wolves are five points better off than their hosts this Sunday. It means they are still looking over their shoulders after back-to-back defeats in the top-flight. Captain Koen Casteels looked to be set to return in goal but was sent back from international duty with Belgium this week due to injury, meaning Pavao Pervan will continue between the posts. At the other end of the pitch, Lukas Nmecha - fresh off the back of earning his third Germany cap in the win over Israel on Saturday - should start a second game in a row, with Kruse and Jonas Wind in support. Coach Florian Kohfeldt will miss the trip, with assistant coach Vincent Heilmann stepping into the dugout.

Match stats

Gregoritsch has seven goals in 19 appearances so far this season, including five since the turn of the year.

Pepi has scored three times in 10 senior international appearances, but is six matches, totalling 266 Bundesliga football, without a goal.

Augsburg are winless in their last eight matches against Wolfsburg (D3, L5). Their overall record is: W6, D8, L7.

Nmecha scored one of his team-leading six Bundesliga goals in the reverse fixture. His last goal fell on Matchday 16, in defeat to Cologne.

John Brooks is set to make his 210th Bundesliga appearance all told, and 140th in all competitions since swapping Hertha Berlin for Wolfsburg.

Kohfeldt has won six of eight Bundesliga games as a coach against Augsburg, losing two.
