Alexander-Arnold's midfield switch bluntly dismissed by Liverpool boss Klopp

Jurgen Klopp has no plans to shift Trent Alexander-Arnold from his right-back berth to a central-midfield role.

Liverpool star Alexander-Arnold is renowned for his impeccable delivery of the ball and he has already racked up 35 assists in the Premier League at the tender age of 22.

The Englishman's creative output has led to calls for him to be given a chance in the centre of the park - which Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate has noted.

Southgate deployed Alexander-Arnold on the right of the midfield three for Sunday's World Cup qualifier against Andorra, and he helped England to a convincing 4-0 victory.

But Klopp insists he has no interest in following Southgate's lead, questioning why he would want to tamper with the "best right-back in the world".

"If you watch our games, Trent's position already changed when possible," Klopp told reporters on Friday.

"[There is] No need to make him a midfielder now. A shame we talk about this in 2021, good players play everywhere, Trent plays right-wing, everywhere. He can play midfield. More a 6 than 8.

"But why would you make the best right-back in the world a midfielder? I struggle to understand how you can think that?

"Some people think he could be more influential in midfield. How is it possible to be more influential than Trent Alexander-Arnold? We use him as good as we can."

Alexander-Arnold has played 90 minutes in each of Liverpool's three Premier League fixtures this season, picking up an assist in the 2-0 victory over Burnley last month.

The Reds dropped their first points the following weekend against Chelsea, when they were unable to find a winner despite playing the second half with an extra man after Reece James' red card.

The result raised questions of the strength and depth of Klopp's squad, which was only added to with the £35million arrival of centre-back Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig over the summer.

Nonetheless, the German manager insists he is more than content with the players at his disposal.

"We sold some players, Ibu [Konate] come in, some on loan to give them more chances. So it is all good," said Klopp of Liverpool's transfer business.

The Reds return to action after the international break with a tricky trip to Marcelo Bielsa's Leeds United on Sunday afternoon.

Liverpool were held to a 1-1 draw at Elland Road in this fixture last season, so Klopp will be hoping his side go one better even in the absence of key personnel.
