7 footballers following in their fathers' footsteps from Carragher to Ince

Charlie Savage, son of former Wales midfielder Robbie, became the latest son of a former player to make his debut - here we look at a clutch of other players who have famous dads

Last week saw Manchester United give youth a chance in their final Champions League group game.

The dead rubber against the aptly-named Young Boys saw interim boss Ralf Rangnick ring the changes, with a clutch of academy kids on the bench.

One of those to come on in the second half was Charlie Savage, son of former Wales midfielder and one-time United academy graduate Robbie.

Savage is just the latest son of a former professional footballer to step up to the senior ranks.

Here, we look at seven players currently in the EFL whose dads were high-profile players back in the day.

Which of these players do you rate most highly? Let us know in the comments section

Tyrese Campbell

Stoke striker Campbell is the son of ex-Arsenal forward Kevin.

Kevin lifted all three domestic trophies during his time at Highbury before moving on to play for Nottingham Forest, Everton and West Brom.

He retired in 2007.

Tyrese, aged 21, picked up the mantle when he joined Man City's academy before switching to Stoke. He made his senior debut in the Premier League in 2018.

He then had a profitable loan spell at Shrewsbury but is now firmly in the first team picture in the Potteries. He spent almost 10 months out with a knee injury recently, returning to action in October.

James Carragher

Wigan defender James is the son of former Liverpool stalwart Jamie.

Carragher senior spent his entire career at Anfield and is now a prominent pundit and co-commentator on Sky Sports' Premier League coverage.

As for James, he recently penned his first senior contract with the Latics after four years in their youth set-up.

He made his senior debut in an EFL Cup tie and won plaudits from ex-England striker Kevin Phillips, who described the youngster as "incredible".

He's currently on the sidelines however, after sustaining a knee injury that saw him stretchered off during an EFL Trophy clash.

Devante Cole

Barnsley striker Devante, 26, is the son of legendary Premier League striker Andrew.

Cole senior is third on the all-time scoring list since the top flight rebranded in 1992. He has 187 strikes to his name and won a plethora of trophies during his time at Manchester United.

As for Devante, he joined the academy at Manchester City as a youngster. But after a couple of loan spells he was released in 2015 having never made a senior appearance for City.

He's since played for the likes of Bradford, Motherwell and Wigan and last summer rejoined one of his former clubs in Barnsley. He has one goal from 10 league appearances so far this term.

George Hirst

David Hirst is best remembered as a cult hero striker for Sheffield Wednesday. He spent 11 years at Hillsborough, helping them lift the League Cup in 1991 and playing in the Premier League.

He won three England caps and once hit a thunderous effort against Arsenal that held the record for the fastest recorded shot, clocking 114mph back in 1996.

His son George, 22, is also a striker on the books at Leicester City. He started his career at Wednesday but made a controversial switch to the Foxes after originally joining their sister club Leuven.

This season he is out on loan at League One side Portsmouth, and played against Wednesday recently in a goalless draw.

Tom Ince

Arguably one of the most recognisable surnames in football, Tom's dad Paul won 53 England caps and lifted a plethora of trophies whilst at Man United.

His son started on the books at Liverpool but struggled to make a breakthrough. He has gone on to play in the Premier League for three different clubs.

Now 29, he's at Stoke City, who he joined back in 2018 for a fee estimated to be worth as much as £12million.

Has made just six league outings for the Potters this term.

Mattie Pollock

Pollock's dad Jamie represented the likes of Middlesbrough and Bolton in the 1990s before moving to Manchester City.

He spent two years at Maine Road but undoubtedly will always be remembered for scoring one of the most bizarre own goals ever. During a game against QPR, Pollock flicked the ball over an opposing player before sending a looping header over his own goalkeeper.

That contributed to City being relegated to the third tier for the first time ever.

His son Mattie is a 20-year-old defender who joined Premier League side Watford in the summer. He had spent three years with Grimsby before the Hornets swooped.

He's on loan at League One newcomers Cheltenham this season, and has made 20 appearances so far.

Josh Windass

Dean Windass was an experienced striker who represented the likes of Bradford and Middlesbrough before famously taking his boyhood club Hull City into the Premier League in 2008.

To make it even more special, Windass scored the winning goal in the play-off final at Wembley to boot.

His son Josh is now at Sheffield Wednesday but was at Glasgow Rangers for two years.

Windass senior is hoping to spearhead the Owls' promotion charge out of League One this season after returning from injury.
